Update 7:00PM

As predicted its slowed down dramatically, as you can see by the screenshot compared to the last one which was going at over 1000kb/s.

The follow flashget pictures were of a file coming off an international rapidshare server.

The international speed to LA at this present time is very unstable, I can't even run a game off a US server and download at the same time without it dramatically causing bandwidth latency.

hobsonlea: Yup - not as bad as it has been but poor never the less.

Had the call from support desk on Friday evening, to my call raised Thurs evening.
Call went something like

Orcon "responding to your support call"
Me "great"
Orcon "we know what the issue was and have now fixed it"
Me "great when did you fix it"
Orcon "around midday thursday"
Me "really"
Orcon "yes"
Me "do you know when I raised my support call"
Orcon "ahh "
Me "have a look"
Orcon "ahh thursday evening"
Me "yup"
Orcon "ahh well we know about that issue too and are working on it"
Me "really"

at this point he did the only decent thing, and laughed, which I actually appreciated

I sent back the requested tracert's last nite...

Performance today (2:40pm ) is 724Kbs for San Jose and 2583kbs for local

Possibly the best post in this entire thread. XD

Ping is rather bad atm... little brother is wowing (-_-'), 1200 ping before, and now constantly red (not sure of the specifics).

Could be worse i guess. :/

Out of curiousity, when you test a slow one to LA could you try a test to Yokohama.
I've found on snap slow speeds to most place yet to Japan it rocks hard.. I wonder if that is the case for Orcon

Snap is the same... link to Japan is the rockzor.. even if other links are dog slow.
I even tested with youtube.. youtube.com was caching so I tried youtube.jp and picked obvious local content that stream with no pause.

So it is certainly a upstream provision problem.. I would like to know the orcon ration of number of users to upstream bandwidth.. perhaps we are 1 orcon customer away from the CFO approving increase of upstream bandwidth...

ah fred i figured it out you must use the Hyperlink (for web pages)

there is a little tree icon when you are posting, in the icon strip above where you type.

Click on that and you get options to insert an image. Strangely it does not work for inserting the tree gif!

I'm just testing to see if the traditional [img] tag works:

In other words: Even you have ADSL2 (latest blabla) and such great line connection, forget about getting good transfer rates outside New Zealand.

Be happy with what you have OR show us MORE money ("thousands of dollats per month") to join 21 century internet club :)

I remember a day when i was happy about goverment decision to unbundle internet in NZ, but now when i see the situation today i think that we actually didnt get any benefit out of it, but we know who actually did :)

Before i joined Orcon, i was on Xtra (adsl1). Xtra connection speed was way better then Orcon today.

So for all of you guys who think ADSL2 at orcon will bring you far better speed your answer is here:

Hmmz now when i have read this again and again, i feel like we were missled ?
Before MAX/MAX came out - the story was If you line quality is good - you will have MAX download rate - and it was like that (on XTRA adsl1)

Now with Orcon - ADSL2 - Line quality is good, but international download rate are ***limited*** coz Orcon is SMALL ISP with NO INTERNATIONAL BANDWIDTH CAPACITY and instead getting ADSL2 (like we were promissed)- our download rates are ACTUALLY ADSL1 speed (even more slower then adsl1).

Since orcon advertises ADSL2 (latest blablabla - join the fastest blabla) - we actually have >ADSL1 !

They didnt tell us we will be on ADSL1 ? They didnt tell us about limiting international traffic ?

Or am i wrong ?

If we were living in France - we would already have a protests on the streets and we would go after their heads! :)

Just an idea :P

If Orcon international bandwidth is so bad how do you account for this....

10/27/2008 2:27 AM GMT	302 kb/s	474 kb/s	407 ms	San Diego, CA	~ 6500 mi

10/27/2008 2:26 AM GMT	524 kb/s	413 kb/s	182 ms	Los Angeles, CA	~ 6550 mi

All to the USA one after the other and some are good and some are bad.
Bad ones notably around LA.

Just maybe the trouble could be at the other end of the pipe not all at Orcon's end.
It is so easy to blame Orcon for all problems without even thinking of other causes.

Maybe worth considering...

This is speed test server wich i have setup for all of us here. Server is NOT under bandwidth load and it will show you maximum download rate from USA.

So that option thats something wrong on other side is not true.

Yes I am looking at the speed results ....But apparantly you are not !

The point is although the speed to LA etc is poor.....Then why is the speed to Chicago and Olympia At 5880 and 4636 kb/s.

If the international bandwidth was the problem surely they would also be down.

And the speed test site you mentioned is the same one I used just the mini version of it. ( Speedtest.net)

You must have a fast ADSL1 connection if 5880kb/s is worse than it....

Edit..

By the way speed to LA and Chicago now.
