AviZ: changed to google dns servers and change the same server in my router bang youtube is now working flawless without buffering

Can you please provide a traceroute to cache.l.google.com while using google dns?

Hi,

I am not with Snap, so please excuse my intrusion, but I am having identical problems with my Youtube. I can barely watch a 360p video let alone a 720P, as the speed that it's buffering doesn't keep up with the watching speed. I am with Unleash who have been trying to find the problem.

I can watch the same video fine on my phone (VF) or using my ADSL2+ connection at the office and it's buffering super quickly. Seems like some video's are ok, others not so much!

I am wondering how I can troubleshoot the problem? I am confident it's not an issue with my PC since I have the same problems on my tablet etc as well.

How can I tell which cache my browser is pulling content from when I play videos? Is there a way to hard code to use a specific cache?

Is it possible that Unleash are using Snap Caches?

Youtube will do a DNS lookup for cache.l.google. From here the server which is deemed to be closest will be used.

This is why Mark has asked for people to provide trace routes to cache.l.google.com as this shows which server it is downloading from and the route there.

Seems to indicate the problem might be the cache server perhaps?

Napster, are you familar with changing your hosts file? can I recommend you try adding

203.109.178.26 cache.l.google.com

to your hosts file and see if that helps.

Have never played around with the hosts file.

This is the location right? C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

and do i just add "203.109.178.26 cache.l.google.com" at the bottom?

Youtube is still pulling content from Snaps cache instead of cache.l.google.com203.109.178.26. Did i miss something?

napster, so you made that change, your hosts file has the changes as I put them to you?

How are you determining that it's still pulling from Snaps servers? Was it no better for you?

If you ping cache.l.google.com what IP are you getting? In the hosts file is there a space between the ip and host name?

Your hosts file could look something like this:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should

Adding stuff to your hosts file will break things more. Most cache's do not have only one IP address as they are a stack of servers not a single server.

In summary if you wish to break it more follow the advise of adding the stuff to your hosts file. Its better just to leave it to DNS.

I wasn't suggesting it as a permanent fix, I was simply suggesting it as a testing step to see if it helped and to further narrow down the cause of the problem. At worst it could be a temporary workaround until the full time solution is located.

Hi guys,

One thing you can try is setting Google's public DNS servers (IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). If you could test Youtube performance using Google's DNS, post the results and some trace routes this would be great. Then we will have a comparison to Snap's DNS.

Hi I have tried changing dns made no difference but changing my hosts file temporarily worked so seems to indicate snap cache I think

Aren't most GGC's blackbox's as far as the ISP can see and it's operation remains under google's control?
