For the record, after I re-wired my phoneline (taking off the cabling to the 2nd phone jack), my downstream attenuation dropped from 8db to 7. This may have been mostly due to the poorly punched-down wiring that was present before. I've just completed wiring the incoming connection directly to the ADSL jack and the attenuation is the same, but I seem to be getting a 0.5mbit faster downstream sync on average. Not bad for $1.40 worth of crimps and a bit of gumption for a total saving of $398.60! :)

The real proof of course is how VDSL goes when it's installed next week... We shall see...

ok received a call from chorus this morning saying that they are connecting my VDSL and my broadband will be going down , i asked him why since they havent done my splitter or wiring, his reply just use the filters i have. Well i rang Snap and they checked the order and said its not what was asked for, everything was meant to be done at the same time and the technician was supposed to stay untill everything was working correctly. so now im running vdsl on a adsl2 setup and although i have a connection , im syncing at lower speeds that adsl2 so now i have to wait for chorus to turn up to fix it , although Snap did say that since Chorus stuffed up, i may not have to pay. fingers crossed.

Finally got the router after the non performance of courierpost and its not new looking. Was it just opened to get configured? The router is just inside the cardboard box with no plastic around it.

Hey Richard,

Good to hear you got the modem. We do open them up to change out some cables for New Zealand ones (they come with european charges). They don't come to us wrapped in plastic either!

We take them out of the box to configure it for you, but it is new.

Cheers!

Ok. seems that rattling around gets dust from rubbing the cardboard over it and makes it look a little mankey.

Looking foward to swapping it over and seeing how it goes.

I've emailed these questions to support@snap, but have not received a reply so figured I'd ask here.
What is the attenuation limit for VDSL? I'm currently on ADSL2+ with 20.5db. Can I get VDSL with attenuation this high? If so, what sort of sync speeds would I be likely to get?
Does Snap offer a cheaper VDSL modem for this service? I already have a decent router, so wouldn't need one with wireless/voip in it.

I'm not too sure what you would expect with your attenuation level. But in terms of the VDSL Modem, The Fritzbox at $160inc GST is the cheapest option I've seen to date. I was looking at upgrading my ADSL system to use a Netgear DGND3700, but now I'm moving to Snap (soon), I"m sure that the Fritzbox will tick the boxes. I believe it also has DECT built in to connect to your standard DECT cordless phones which may come in handy.

well i had everything connected but it looks like VDSL with a phone on my line is a no go, synced lower than ADSL2  and my line attenuation went up to 24 from 17 so im going back to ADSL2 , Snap is bringing in VOIP in a few weeks so will try again then and try naked. And yes , the fritz box will work with Dect type phones , it recognised my dect phone when i tried to connect to it and it was fairly easy to do.

Simple a nswer is no, absolutely no chance in the world of you getting VDSL2, the max attenuation is 10.8dB

The only exception to this blanket no is if you poor attenuation is caused by poor internal wiring and should actually be a lot better. The Chorus SAT will give you a pretty good guide.

I'm about 850m from the exchange by road. The phone cable comes in from the road, joins some cat5e, then goes about 5m and straight into the modem.
According to the Chorus SAT my neighbours are eligible for VDSL but I am not.
No FTTH date given for my address yet either. Yay.

For anyone interested our changeover to Snap's VDSL went very smoothly and we now get downloiad speeds 3-5 times faster than ADSL and more importantly to me upload speeds 10 x faster ! Good times. 14.82 D / 7.87 U The download typically ranges from 12-18 with the upload consistent 7.5-8

Just out of interest, what are your attenuation details & what is your wiring setup (splitter, straight connection, nothing etc)?

In fact according to Speedtest.net we are getting a 32ms ping,  26.14mbs down and 8.19 up.
Attenuation details ?? The wiring comes into a new vdsl2 splitter over 2 wires of a Cat6 cable from the line connection at the side of the house.
