You mentioned not wanting to move to fibre due to not having a phone in the event of a power cut, what's your contingency for powering your cordless phones in the event of a power cut? does the base station also have a battery or something?

The panasonic phone that proved to be causing the issues has a battery back up thing in it so it will work in the event of a power cut. This new phone I have just got out of storage and got working again also has a battery back up thing in the base and will work if the power goes out. AND I have an old corded phone that plugs directly into the jack point that obviously will work. There is not enough cell phone coverage at my house to be able to make phone call using a cell phone.

I know you will all laugh at this, but the last time a Chorus man had to come here to my house, earlier this year, because someone somewhere had flicked the wrong switch and I lost my internet..... I'm not kidding..... that Chorus man said he was also staying on Copper for as long as he could.

The Chorus man is a f***ing idiot then.

Honestly, if fibre is available, Just switch to it. Until then, enjoy your terribly slow and unreliable copper service.

Given your location, I imagine the AM transmitters at Highcliff may be causing some interference with some of your electronic devices (maybe even including your phones).

It would be a much more widespread known issue if that were the case, especially in places like Titahi Bay.

Please go and troll somewhere else. I have stated my reasons in numerous posts previously. If you want to send me the money each month to pay for a new fibre service feel free, and to pay for and install a decent back up power supply for this fibre service! Until then go away!

Good grief people Tomahawk66 has stated on numerous posts that he wishes to stay on copper. That is his choice and he/she does not need to justify that to anyone. So lets stop banging on about Fibre its all verging on bullying.

It isn't that simple for some people. Usually for financial reasons. I know several people with xDSL connections in areas where fibre is available that cannot afford to move to fibre. They are usually on legacy plans, require a landline number, only modest data requirements, have limited income and the absolute cheapest fibre/landline or FW/landline (no good for the OP due to coverage) is $20-$30 more per month. Justifying that extra expenditure is simply not possible without sacrificing something else.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

It is, I know a few people that used to live up the road from the transmitters (one almost next door) and they had endless interference on their cordless phone. This was in the 1990s, so probably a bit different now - plus the large National Radio one is gone now too.

In the 90's they would have been analogue cordless phones, so yes back then it could have been an issue.

Thank you RunningMan :-)

The good news is, thanks to your help and a few other kind people on here, with the other phone plugged in everything is back to normal. I put everything back as it previously was, cables wise, and am still using my own old filters (I have another one from a neighbour I might try just for curiousity at a later date). I made a phone call earlier today, with the computer on and a web page up and it was perfect. The call was clear at my end and at my friend's end (who is on fibre). While on that phone call I also looked at the numbers and they were fine, back up where they used to be.

This is how it looked while I was speaking on the new phone. These speeds are ample for me to do what I need and want to do. I can watch TV on demand in full HD with no buffering 99% of the time with this connection and have been doing so today.

Yup, that's about as good as you'll get on ADSL2+ without moving to VDSL or fibre.

Excellent. Looks like the phone you had plugged in was the culprit. More than likely the power supply it seems.

EDIT: I expect your speed will improve over the next week or 2 as DLM does it's thing. Currently sitting with a 12dB noise margin which will probably drop to 6dB once it realises the line isn't unstable any more (due to all the modem restarts and disconnects during troubleshooting).

It's perfectly fine for me so I am happy. Thank you for your help earlier on, much appreciated.

Yes, must have been that other phone.  re your edit comment.....  I hope so.... That is why I haven't disconnected to try the new line filter I got from a neighbour as I want it to settle down, like you say. :-)

Something might be not quite right. I have not turned the modem off or done anything since it started working again yesterday.  I've just rechecked the numbers after the computer being on for almost 3 hours now and the  DSL up time only said 30mins or so. But I haven't turned anything off. Surely the DSL uptime should read at almost 3 hours as that is how long the computer has been on and I have been online this morning. I did a quick google search and found this from a similar query:

"Correct, system uptime is powered time, DSL uptime is time since last line (DSL) disconnection. DSL uptime is the important parameter for determining line problems."

And my numbers have dropped back, they were higher when I looked when I first went online.
