Now you have given them the idea probably will be poorly implemented without warning in about a month, rolled back because "they heard you" and then reimplemented 6 months later like this.

Nah, they'd already be considering it given this new "plan". Maybe already written it off since I don't think the NZ public would accept it. I found it surprising its still a thing abroad.

Personally, I'm not too against this new plan. They already allow you to share your data with another account. With that you'd be paying at least $10/month. The big difference is you dont get a separate phone number - which would be desirable for something like a watch where I can also make/receive calls, sms etc without my phone being nearby.

If it stays as just that I'm ok with it. Like others I fear its just the start of a slippery slope. And given how easy it is to port away in NZ they have to be very very careful.

People will vote with their feet and leave. I just hope they don't muck around with the users currently sharing data and make them pay the $5

Yes I am currently looking at the offers from both One and Spark to move my personal mobile over (already have the work one moved after the “soon but later” bulls**t around wearables).

It does look like they have spent time doing this rather than working on things customers have been asking / screaming about.  All Vocus has done is remove value from 2d plans and services.

Now a better way to have done all this…….

”Hi all, we know you want wearables and all going to plan it should be around xxxx, will update if this changes.  Also due to wearables we have had to make some changes to sharing data, wearables will be around the $x mark and we will be reducing the amount of “free” data sharing from 5 to 2.  This still means you can share your data with your tablet and 1 other device for free, after that any other shares are $5. We understand that its a bit of a change but we think we have found a balance between charging and being fair”

But nope, no info on anything and having to find out about the changes via a banner in our accounts.

I'm not seeing anything in the 2degrees app. Does this only apply to some plans?

https://www.2degrees.nz/mobile-plans/pay-monthly

There is a new tab there for the sidekick plan

The new T&C's that were updated last week or so.

Sidekick Plans

  1. Sidekick Plans are available to be added to any of our current Carryover, Endless and Group Plans (Boss Plan).
  2. All plans must be on the same Account.
  3. Sidekick Plans have no recurring allocations and automatically share data from their Boss Plan and any calls and text use will be charged at the applicable mobile casual rates.
  4. Shared data from the Boss Plan will automatically default to open sharing option (ie not a set allocation of shared data).  Standard Shared data terms and conditions apply.
  5. You may add multiple Sidekick Plans to the same Boss Plan.
  6. For each Sidekick Plan that is successfully set up, you, as the Account Holder, will be charged from $5 (incl. GST) each Billing Month.
  7. The Account Holder may add up to 1 interest free device per Sidekick Plan in selected 2degrees sales channels.
  8. The Account Holder will be responsible for:

    • any Charges incurred using a Sidekick Plan including roaming and international and premium calls over and above the relevant monthly Plan charges; and
    • any interest free repayments for any device or accessories added to your Account.
  9. If the Boss Plan is terminated any associated Sidekick Plans will also be terminated.  Any Sidekick Plans you wish to keep will need to be moved to another Boss Plan on your account before the original Boss Plan is terminated.
  10. The Account Holder may terminate any Sidekick Plan at any time. You will be liable to pay all Charges outstanding in respect of the Sidekick Plan on termination including your Sidekick Plan Charge for the month up to your next Billing Date and any remaining interest free repayments.

The only good news about all this is people on the endless plans now can data share to other devices as you could not do this before on endless plans.

The old help pages on how to share data are still online as well, so i am not 100% sure what is going on, maybe they just wanted to slip it in and hope that already share for free don't notice. https://www.2degrees.nz/help/mobile-help/sharing/shared-data

Even more confusing is that in the updated T&C's that have the sidekick info it also still has this.

Sharing Data

  1. You cannot share data on your Endless Plan.
  2. You may share data on your Carryover Plan to up to 5 numbers (each a Recipient). Each Recipient must be on an active Carryover Plan or 2degrees Carryover Prepay plan in order to use data shared from your Carryover Plan.

Yeah I see this as a soft launch of "hey want a sim for your device or tablet? That'll be $5/mo thankyou"

I fully imagine they'll roll forward with blocking those with prepaid sims soon telling those users "tough".

@Linux "yet" but the writing is on the wall here as they wanted to do it before, they will attempt to do it again.

At times like this I wish we had .gif support here. I would do one of those small party poppers ones.

Eyes up iOS17.4

Thats A LOT (I imagine) of users who would leave. Honestly seems like that would be commercial suicide.

Points to the T&C's

"Each Recipient must be on an active Carryover Plan or 2degrees Carryover Prepay plan in order to use data shared from your Carryover Plan."

None of mine are on either of these plans but still seem to be working.  Maybe we did get grandfathered in 6 months ago

DMA comes into force 6 March 2024 so iOS 17.4 needs to be released by then if Apple wants to avoid penalties.
Of course there is no guarantee that this would line up with any 2degrees changes.
