I use my smartphone for emails, a bit of google map + facebook/twitter etc.
Which rarely go over 250mb a month.
Never used my phone for radio, there is one built in and why use a mobile when I have an ipod touch....

Sorry, it was a little 'tongue in cheek' to be honest.

However the answer to your question is in your second statement. Why not stream the radio instead of using a built-in one as the clarity is a lot better and why carry both a phone and an ipod when the phone can do it all ?

It all 'horses for courses' of course but I got fed up with carrying a phone and an ipod, and having to wait until the ipod was in wireless range to download podcasts, or being out and about with friends and needing to check something on the web which my phone can but ipod cant etc.

Now I have a smartphone which does everything in one package and fits nicely in my pocket and with a decent wedge of data available each month I can use it to its fullest.

Ive wired a USB power supply into the cigaretter lighter and installed a docking station with audio out to my car stereo. The phone will charge, give me directions and play all my music/podcasts through the stereo and when a call comes in it mutes and comes out the speakers.

When Im at work I listen to my music via my laptop using ASIO4ALL putting the sound directly to an external DAC/AMP through to my Senn595's. Thats when Im worried about quality, no matter what you spend on car audio you will always be fighting road noise so Im not that bothered about what quality comes out of the phone. In my experience there is sod all difference between what my ipod touch put out when compared to my Nexus anyway.

If I could be bothered Id set up my server at home to stream my music, videos, photos etc to the phone aswell. Why be limited to the size of your memory card when I can just stream it ?

People have been itching for larger fixed BB caps for as long as I can remember, yet when were given all the data you could possibly want on a phone, we struggle to know what to do with it.

i am ignorant but my assumption is that there will be a flat cost to 2D for data and the variable will effectively be in the adminstration, they can profitably (my assumption :P) sell 1gb for $20 so they can profitably sell 500mb for $10, maybe not with as much margin as the 1gb pack but still with a positive margin none the less.

The other way to look at this would be they sell the 1gb pack at a loss leader and rely on users not fully utilising the whole 1gb to create profit as someone eluded to earlier which i very much doubt

except they aren't actually selling 1GB of data, they are selling however much people use - which is very different. (same goes for every telco)

e.g. If people who buy the 1GB plan might use on average 300MB, then offering a 500MB plan for $10 mean a lot of people who currently buy the 1GB for $20 will be better off switching down to the 500MB plan and keeping the same usage.
IOW, those customers would cost 2D the same (cos they use the same amount of data), but they get half as much revenue from them.

depending on the cost of data, this might even make them totally unprofitable.

I hear what you are saying and if we were talking about on of the incumbents I would agree but this is two degrees who iirc are about giving the little guy a better deal and only paying for what you use?

Yep, no doubt – don’t need to be a genius to see that 1GB for $20 is cheaper than 500MB for $30 that the other carriers do (provided you don’t need to use it outside the main 4 areas)

Nope. If that were the case then they would have to either have no expiry date at all on the data (so you always got to use up your cap) or only charge for data per MB e.g. 5c/MB so you never bought any data you didn’t use.

Lets keep perspective, my comments are relative to a typical smartphone plan scenario, the other carriers include sufficient data allowances within their smartphone plans to cater for typical smartphone usage without buying their additional data packs.

Granted, one is HSDPA (2degrees) the other is HSPA (Telecom NZ). But I have to balance the results and the cost. I might stop paying on account but move to a Telecom prepay option.

I was using my 2degrees SIM card tonight, but some of the downloads were quite slow (I'm in Auckland for a few days).

Here's mine:

Perfectly acceptable in my opinion, but obviously much lower than what you're getting in Auckland. I've had some great results on XT out in small towns and rural areas, but in the city I find that any of the telcos can be quicker depending on the exact location.

Didn't PC World or someone do a comparison test recently that showed 2degrees being the fasted mobile broadband on average? I can't find the article but perhaps someone else has the link?

While I don't mind the speeds with 2degrees while using the SIM card on a handset (push email and other stuff will work and I don't keep waiting for things), it's a bit annoying when yuo are using it in a USB modem and want things done...

The number of times a connection stalled while I was in Auckland. Using a Sierra Wireless USB modem, I had to restart the connection about five times in about four hours use.

Interestingly it's not exactly that data traffic stops, but it seems DNS just disappears. Any resolution is gone but cached sites will continue to work. Things like Geekzone was already open in my browser and a LogMeIn session open both continue to respond but new things such Outlook or even browsing to a new site not used before in that session would just fail.

interesting, never happen to me when i was in auckland or wellington recently. i use my milestone2 as a hotspot for hours. i remember i had my phone turned on as wifi hotspot at 10pm, i woke up at 5am, switch on my macbook air and can surf rightaway. if connection drops, the hotspot will be turned off and it will not reestablish automatically. that means at least 7 hours of no disconnection overnight. i continue surfing various websites at least 3-4 hours after that. never need to restart the connection or encounter any DNS issues.

I would prefer any of the above over the existing broadband zone packs. The advantage of having people buying larger length packs, would be people being less likely to switch because of 1. better value, 2. having data that hasn't expirered that they would want to use up before switching.

when you say DNS disappears do you mean the DNS server addresses in your ip config or that you just get no response to DNS queries?
It definitely sounds like it would be a device issue as i have had single PDP contexts up for days without seeing anything like this. There were large blocks of time 5hrs+ that it was idle on the network but still connected.

Where did you get a Sierra Wireless USB modem from? i don't remember Vodafone or Telecom supplying them, unless it was the WiFi dongle from Vodafone.

It was non-DNS responses. It is a Sierral Wireless 308, the HSPA+ model as sold by Telecom. Running latest firmware and connection manager.

The current regional broadband options would be fine given an increase in timeframe. There is no point reinventing the wheel, just tweak it a bit!
