Beccara: Aren't most GGC's blackbox's as far as the ISP can see and it's operation remains under google's control?

You'd be correct that it is managed and maintained by google.

You guys are clearly missing the point.

Here is my straight up answer:

There is nothing wrong with the cache. Clearly there are other outside factors influencing the 'slow' youtube.

I've had a couple of users complaining about YouTube performance across our Snap VDSL.
I've just spent a few hours testing various videos through both Snap and Hosting Direct.
From what I can tell anything coming from Snap's cache is fine, first 40 seconds can buffer at ~30Mb/sec.
Anything not cached struggles to play without buffering.

On average 720p will stream at ~3mbps on Hosting Direct, Snap ~1mbps.

Traceroutes looks more favourable through Snap with fewer hops and lower latency but throughput is poor.

Are you aware that video is private so no-one else will be able to test it to compare their experiences?

Is there another?

I haven't had an issue since I changed my hosts file, and whilst it shouldn't be a permanent solution, as a temporary workaround it seems to have helped a few people.

(I'm talking about google's caching servers).. I'm commenting on Orcon's servers (not snaps) but google caches should work the same with most ISPs.

If a part of a video (videos are saved in various chunks on the servers) is not cached it will come from overseas..

You can see this by doing a tcpdump of a video that no one has watched and if it is not in the cache it will come from overseas.

If you watch the video again you will see most of the parts will come from the cache and play really fast.

Ie on an Orcon connection the uncached video will come from overseas (AU or US)
and if the parts of the video are cached it will come from 60.234.81.X address

Live videos (www.youtube.com/live) look like they come from the local cache

Also to note.. if you are using google's/opendns DNS it will STILL sending you to the local cache.

If people think using opendns/google dns makes the videos faster then maybe the uncached version is coming from a faster location ?????

Got the email and only been able to look at a few non popular videos.
However they do seem to need MORE buffering.
