if you bridge it to another router, does that mean things like firewall, port forwarding and dhcp are the responsibility of the other router? (is that a way to get port forwarding to work?)

Bridging the router essentially turns it into a relay, all information is just passed through the bridged router and sent to the router it's connected to, DHCP, firewall, portforwarding are all the responsibility of the router it's connected to as well. If you turn the slingshot router into a bridge, you'll have to have everything connected to the non bridged router as the bridged router will no longer be able to give internet access.

I've either got a bad build of the firmware or I'm doing it wrong. Could you please post your firmware version/date and some screenshots of how you set it up? Maybe a few words on things to watch out for.

I'd really, really appreciate it if you did. Not having the timed internet access restrictions in Tomato is a real PITA with a teenager.

How bricked is it?

It's now a 4 port gigabit switch. That is seriously all it is now.

LAN1-4 lights work. Power light works.

If I plug the DSL cable in, the DSL light will go steady green, and slingshot are able to see it online. It won't try to do the DSL logon though.

DHCP doesn't work. The web UI's server is down on every IP I can think to try. No password prompt, nothing, just not there. Either it's not responding to ping or it doesn't boot far enough to actually have an IP address. I connected via ethernet directly to it, with my PC as the only device on it, pinged every IP between 192.168.0.0 -> 192.168.20.255. There's nothing there. Wifi is gone.

It was the reset button that bricked it. Immediately before pressing it I was able to get into the web UI, ping it, etc.

Did you soft reset it or hard reset it? Try setting a manual ip in 192.168.1.0 range on your machine, the modem should be using 192.168.1.1 after a factory/hard reset.

I'm not sure what you mean by soft/hard reset, I used the reset button in the back and power cycled it. Tried the manual IP thing already, no luck.

hard reset = hold the reset button in for around 10 seconds for factory reset.

My first problem with this model of modem was that it would randomly change my vdsl and admin username and passwords, only a hard reset would fix it. The replacement modem seems to have fixed that. I'm still only getting 15mbit/5mbit tho :(, but assume that is the wiring in my house or distance from the exchange (600m straight line, maybe 800-900m all up I guess).

Sure,

Excuse the date/time, I reset the router right before bridging and never bothered to fix it.

Bridging was quite simple, I reset the slingshot router beforehand, disabled wireless and then set the active PPPoE connection into bridge mode

VB104W Bridge mode

I then connected my Asus RT-n66u to the LAN1 port of the VB104W (WAN port on the Asus), connected it up to my computer. The Asus warns me there's another device on 192.168.1.1 and offers to change to 192.168.2.1, local ips being 192.168.2.2-192.168.2.254, (Allowing me to connect to the VB104W on 192.168.1.1 and the Asus on 192.168.2.1) I accept. After connecting to the asus, I went through the network setup, choosing PPoE and entering my slingshot email,pass and It connected fine.

Pretty sure the LAN ports on the VB104W are 100Mb haha

Thanks for the pics alexc! I did exactly the same, my firmware date was 09/01/2014 though. Might just be the firmware.

How exactly did you reset it? Software? The button?

Using the button on the back. Have you tried resetting it again, but keeping the button pressed for a bit longer? Just had a look at the Manual and it states to hold the button down for 5 seconds for a reset, but I would have had it pressed for a good 10-15 Seconds. Holding it down for longer might put you into recovery mode as well, if the router has one.

I've tried 1s, 5s, 30s. It just won't reset. I tried the standard erase all settings that you'd do when loading up DDWRT or Tomato too.

Modem is turned on.
Press in reset button. Do not release.
Wait 30s.
Power off.
Wait 30s.
Power on.
Wait 30s.
Power off.
Release reset button now. You should have been holding it this entire time.
Power on.

TL:DR; My modem is not bricked! Got it working as bridge! Modem has lost a few of it's marbles but it's not an issue.

Long story:

I have a Linksys WRT54G v4 with Tomato v1.28 (original) on it. It can get it's internet connection via the WAN RJ45 port or via Wifi. To use the wifi as the source of the internet I set wifi=enabled & wifimode=client. Note these two are completely seperate settings on the config page. To use the WAN port I have to have the wifimode set to anything but client, but it doesn't take into account if wifi is enabled or not. If I have the router set up with wifi=disabled & wifimode=client it tries to use the disabled wifi instead of the WAN port as you'd expect it to.

I had the router set up to get it's internet connection via wifi, from my phone's 3G access point, and share it with the desktop PC's. This was meant to be a temporary measure while chorus installed the master filter, but we ended up continuing to use it when we couldn't get the VDSL modem to work.

Every time I tried to connect my router to the modem with PPPoE I'd disable the wireless and not change the mode. So it was trying to connect the PPPoE over a disabled wifi port. I thought nothing of it as the wifi's disabled, the mode setting is greyed out while it's disabled, so it'll be use the WAN port. But yeah, it doesn't, so.

I had changed the modems IP to 192.168.0.2 before hitting the reset button. I can't get the admin page nor can I get a ping response from neither 192.168.0.1, 0.2, 1.1, 1.2. A massive scan with angry IP scanner of almost every possible LAN address makes me think it's not got it's own IP address. In addition to the stuff alexc posted, I also disabled: DHCP server, DNS relay, anti-attack settings and wifi - all on the VB104W modem. The reset button won't undo any of this. Without the modems admin pages I have no way to check attenuation etc, but I can get that info from my ISP if needs be anyway.

So now I have a VDSL2 modem that can only be used as a bridge. My router is fully exposed to the internet and handles all routing, forwarding, DHCP, and DNS forwarding. Perfect!

Weird, the reset button should reset everything, including DHCP and the routers IP address. If you're interested in connecting to the VB104Ws page, you should be able to assign a different ip address to the bridged router through your current one and see if you can connect through the new ip address. Here's an example of how to do it with dd-wrt, not sure if it can be adapted to Tomato or not.

Don't think Tomato has an equivilent of that. Maybe in more up to date versions it does. When I say I can't get a ping response from neither 192.168.0.1, 0.2, 1.1, 1.2. And when I say there is nothing there when doing angry IP scanner on almost every possible LAN address. I mean I can't do it even with just my PC hooked up directly to port 1 of the modem. So there's nothing to forward to even.
