I got the email but I'm apprehensive about signing up in case it sucks really badly. My partner needs internet for her tech work and if I sign up and am unable to even load international web pages during peak hours then it will be useless.

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.

From reading the various posts, everyone has similar concerns. People are willing to pay the price and commit to the 24 month period, but we want some certainty around actual speed and performance.

This is something that can't be guaranteed until 10,000 subscribers are using it. Slingshot are talking about how they want to be totally transparent. Well if that was true and they actually believed in this plan, then they would have a better 'out' option should the plan not live up to its billing.

I don't see why they won't allow you to change to another Slingshot plan or offer people some sort of trial on the new system for a higher monthly amount. I'd be prepared to pay $100 for the first month to test the plan and then should it not perform as I expect, then I am still prepared to stick with Slingshot for the contract period on another plans. In this situation, Slingshot have nothing to lose. They still get me as a customer for a fixed contract period and the costs of setting up this new plan are covered.

The more I read on this, the more skeptical I am. I won't be committing to anything until I've read about the actual experiences people are having.

If its not fit for use then leave and tell them to stick their termination fee. If you get it installed on a different connection to your existing internet then you can keep the old one incase the new one sucks or they stuff up the installation. I have the flatmates connection to fall back on if I am left without internet but that means no new HD content since he has a low cap and then its $2 a gig.

" Early Termination Fee (ETF): is $149. This applies if you leave Slingshot OR if you switch to a different Slingshot broadband plan before your contract is over. Please note: Slingshot homeline and tolls have a minimum 12 month contract and are subject to a $25 ETF for each service"

ouch! so if you leave slingshot altogether you get stung for $200 in termination fees

and if the plan experience is shoddy and you just want to switch bb plans you still get stung for $149.

The termination fee for switching plans doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

sarahot: Finally!!  What sounds like an honest attempt to bring New Zealand up to Europe/USA levels where no-one even thinks about data plans.  Even mobile data plans in the USA are uncapped for around US$70 so this looks like a great start.  Lets hope it lives up to expectations.

I thought most of the mobile data plans in the US were moving towards a data cap? Isn't T-Mobile the only one who still offers uncapped mobile data plans?

Do you have dsl on both pairs to your house? Does having two dsl lines for one house degrade the connection at all?
Off topic, i know, but im curious :)

Well, not in any significant way. Your own house wiring will have a larger effect anyway. Remember that all the pairs run together out in the street for some distance. As it happens I have dsl on both pairs at my place and get 16-18m on each of them. I am connected to a cabinet

Cheers.. n

Have had it on 3 pairs simultanoiusly here for a while - no difference as far as I can tell once I sorted out the internal wiring.

Moron original telecom installers had mismatched pairs in the cable from demarc to the 2 master sockets on one of the entry cables which was making a noticeable difference - the internal stuff had different colours to the catinary stuff which was recently replaced. Nice contractor that was doing the replacement of the power pole told me do we swapped it over and we both saw an extra 400 downstream give or take. Flatmate is now on a separate catinary cable to the pole, but that is only about 10m before it gets bunched up with all the neighbours cables etc so really don't see it making much difference at all. I see more change in sync just resetting my modem then with the flatmates off or on now that the cabling issue has been sorted.

Since I will be switching from SS to SS I dont expect there to be any great change in performance. It can hardly get any worse to be honest.

I had to quote everything you wrote, because I agree so completely. I decided tonight after reading the Slingshot forums here at GZ that too many people were having complaints on their other plans, and while I'm willing to commit to a service with similar performance to Big Time, I am very hesistant to move with a 2 year lock in.

2 years is a long time to put up with crap broadband, and it's a hassle to move, I'm going to stick with whatever plan Telecom stick me onto after Big Time, cut my usage down and enjoy faster speeds.

Oh slingshot, if only you believed in the plan enough to have a opt out to another plan if this one sucks.

I think I'll be quietly waiting to see what the first users experiences are like.

Why do people think they are stuck with crap broadband for 2 years? The contract termination is only valid if you terminate the contract. If they terminate it by repeatedly failing to deliver what they say they will, then the termination penalty does not apply, otherwise I would look forward to taking them to disputes to pick up the $150 from them.

I also hope they don't do what ihug did and can my direct dial tolls because a call was never made and then act like I canceled the direct dial tolls service.

The fact that you have to kick up a major fuss to get the $150 back puts a lot of us off.

Re tolls: my parents have tolls with them and they didn't seem to care when we didn't make any toll calls in ~4 months (before we finally did)
