I was chatting to Orcon Support on Tuesday about my sisters' ULL connection as the downstream connect rates have dropped. It's most likely caused by mid spam injection after a cabinet install.

I was told that the plan would need to change and that this would become an ADSL1 connection. I queried the rep how this was achieved, as the cabinets would be ADSL2+ and I wondered if Orcon used the forced ADSL1 profiles (i.e. 7616) or limited the upstream to 160kbps.

The rep wasn't able to advise me on this so I'm hoping someone in the know here can enlighten me.

Cheers.

The only thing I can think of that could lead to reverting to ADSL1 was the mention that RBI cabinets may only be ADSL1 compatible so if a connection is Migrated onto an RBI cabinet this could require reverting to ADSL1.

Other than that there really is no reason for required reverting that I can think of, ADSL variants do have different peaks in performance but these are merely things people notice not requirements.

If I am wrong and what you have been told is correct then the logical solution would be to request to be Migrated onto the cabinet its self to prevent these supposed issues.

This blog post of mine here from last year will detail your problem:

Chorus ISAM's are all ADSL2+ capable. If you're on an ADSL1 profile it'll be because Orcon request this so whether you receive an ADSL1 or ADSL2+ connection is between you and Orcon.

If they're on ULL, I can't see how they could have been migrated to RBI - any area that qualifies for that would surely not be profitable enough to install equipment in the exchange.

Maybe orcon is shifting you onto a ADSL1 profile, because it is associated with a lower priced plan, thus you wont have to pay more per month to cover the cost difference between a wholesaled and ULL plan?

I can imagine a lot of people, especially non-geeks, would be pissed off when they called their ISP about low speeds and were told they had to pay more per month to receive the same level of service that they got before cabnetisation. (yes i have read sbiddle's, article, im looking at this from a layperson's POV)

If they shifted they would lose the additional services (i.e. Call ID, Call Waiting) or have to pay an extra $15/month to retain those. Rather luckily Sis has yet to work out how too use the Call Waiting so that wouldn't be a major. Wink

My confusion was over the stated ADSL1 profile when we all know the cabinets are 2+ and the Orcon site indicates all new plans are Full Speed/Full Speed. Seemed a little strange to me.

Many thanks for the replies so far.Smile

If you're somehow are on an old non FS plan then they're probably going to keep you on that. Speeds are something between you and Orcon.

Why not just move to Genius?
