My wife has recently moved to an iPhone 3GS, and is on 2d prepay.  Everything else is set up and working, but I have a question around the MMS settings.

Following the guide on www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/iphone, it mentions that mobile data must be enabled under the MMS section.  She is on a casual prepay plan (may set her up with the 19data plan at a later date), so will this MMS setting 'unleash the hounds' in terms of mobile data usage?

With mobile data turned off, she is unable to send MMS messages.

Leave Mobile Data on.

on the Data APN set a random APN setting so data will not work
on the MMS APN Set the correct one (and correct MMS Settings)

This will allow MMS to work but Data will not work.

Take care: this will not work in 2degrees coverage. In 2degrees coverage if you use an incorrect (or empty) APN it will be automatically translated to 'internet' and it will work. However if you are only using the phone in Vodafone roaming coverage, then this will work as the translation does not happen while roaming.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

Are there any APN's which this WON'T happen?? like on Vodafone you can use a MNVO's APN like B&W's or Orcon's APN to disable data after vodafone (without officially announcing it (As far as I know) made incorrect APN's enable data.

As far as I know aliasing incorrect APN settings to a working APN setting is not very common thing in the carrier world.

(thinking): would setting the DATA APN to mms (the MMS APN ) disable data?

Thanks

We do it to make things easier for people bringing a handset from another network.

Yes, that would probably work. However as far as I'm aware all you have to do is call customer care and tell them you want data disabled. They will remove the * APN from the HLR which disables internet & WAP but allows you to keep using MMS.
