I'm considering a move to snap!, as their new plans look very nice indeed.

I will probably go with VDSL for the extra $50 a month if finances allow, but in the future, if finances don't allow, or the benefit of VDSL speeds don't out-way the extra cost compared to ADSL2+, what are the technicalities of switching back to ADSL2+ from VDSL?

Does snap allow this, and if so, are there any fees/costs involved?

On a technical front there wouldn't be any issues that I can think of.
Most if not all VDSL routers ( The ones I know of anyway ) are ADSL capable too so shouldn't be an issue.

Majority of the time you'll be connected into a ISAM which can handle both ADSL / VDSL and I believe even some UFB and other tripple play services.

So essentially, If I buy/get a new VDSL modem, and then decide in the future that VDSL is not an option, Chorus can just change my line back down to an ADSL2+ line, and the VDSL modem would just function as an ADSL2+ modem?

Yep as far as I understand it, Just a electronic change most of the time more so than a physical repatch.

I'd also recommend starting ADSL then upgrading to VDSL as it's easier to troubleshoot if you run into issues you can test other modems etc without to much issue.

Not sure if it effects Snaps contracts though, I wouldn't imagine so though cause your not terminating service just changing the service type.

Plus be a good way to future proof too, Most of the VDSL routers support ethernet based WAN which should work for UFB too.
Costs a bit in the short term but should pay if long term, Hopefully :)

May depend on who you are switching from? Also are you on a contract, as there could be a break fee.

Hey guys, McGee is correct, there's no real physical change to go back to ADSL from VDSL. The part that takes time is going from ADSL to VDSL as sometimes there's a physical change involved. Once you are on a card that supports both ADSL & VDSL you can pretty much switch between the 2 in hours (within reason - and sometimes this can go wrong)

Because there is no physical line to break and reconnect, (as in disconnecting your ADSL then signing up again a week later) there is no fee to go back to ADSL and your contract remains intact.

I'm already on a cabinet, and it has been upgraded for VDSL. At least, the Chorus SAT tells me that I am VDSL capable. Would there be any physical change involved since the cabinet I am connected to is already good to go, or would there still be a physical change needed?

My line attenuation is 6.0dB down, and 1.0dB up... BTW.

I know, right!! ;-)

That's why I'm so keen to try it out.
Online backups are no fun with 1Mbps up.

To add to those figures, noise margin is 10.7 Down, 12.3 Up.

I signed up to VDSL through Snap with my Fritzbox, my line didn't allow for any decent speeds (actually lower than ADSL2+) so got it changed back, they managed to get it done rather quickly and according to my Fritzbox I am connected to the same DSLAM.

But in saying that, I am now futureproofed when it comes to VDSL or even UFB, since the Fritzbox allows for all of the above.

If you're going to go to VDSL it's worth the extra wee bit of cost to go towards a Fritzbox, these are $345.00 but for the features it gives you (SIP phone, Wireless N with Guest AP, nice interface) it's well worth it. There is also a Android/iOS app for the phone side of things which is rather cool.

Edit:

It also draws your SNR - you know, for the hell of it.

Yeah the fritz boxes are good, Just make sure they are ventilated cause they can get a bit toasty under load.

They are almost a perfect device minus they don't have bridging support natively ( There is some firmware hacks etc )

In what why can't they bridge? The VDSL to the Ethernet? They can, I have mine setup with a PPPoE connection for the SIP/Voice on the Fritz and bridge for the VDSL

How exactly did you get the box to bridge ?

In my case I'm wanting the device to pass all of the WAN details straight to a assigned ethernet port / MAC address which then goes to a linux firewall.

Select Use as DSL Modem. Its a true bridge, so the downstream device will need to make a PPPoE Connection.
