Just wondering if/when 2D is going to upgrade to hspa+? (or whatever the format used to increase speed would be)

I could use faster upload speeds.

I got 2M+ uplink this morning. If it's not on everywhere (in our own coverage) then it's pretty close. If you're roaming on Vodafone you'll get whatever radio features Vodafone offers their own subscribers on that cell. John will know better than I but I believe they have HSUPA on nigh everywhere also.

The higher downlink speeds are more limited in geographic coverage, as you'd expect, but the minimum available speed across any site is 7.2M.

Actually I'm getting some very respectable download speeds here in central lower Hutt of around 7Mbit average but not so great uploads at only 0.6Mbit/s iPhone 4s

Maybe there is HSPA+ around my way.

Any uplink speed over 384kb/s up is HSUPA. But also be aware that it depends on your usage. High speed uplink is expensive in terms of radio channels, so the system only allows you to use it after you've 'proven' you need it with a sustained uplink of at least several seconds. If you are only using short uplink bursts it might never kick in.

I did a speed test on Saturday night at the Geekzone pizza evening and got ~9Mbit which astounded me because I've never seen that sort of performance on 2degrees before, although as someone pointed out there is probably a lot of spare network capacity in the Christchurch CBD at the moment.

Like in your case I think the upload speed was quite poor, though.

can only get about 3.5Mbit/s down now (I suppose it is peak hour) standing right under a 2D cell site. Same place i got over 7Mbit a few hours ago.

Never managed to get over 1Mbit up on any phone anywhere (2D broadband zones) in the country.

oh so the up speed ramps up?
Ive been using the speedtest app so i guess it doesn't really give enough to for the UP to reach full speed?

Yes, exactly. It's not uncommon for Speedtest to show a low uplink speed. But if you look at the graph you'll see it hovering around 0.3M for a few seconds and then jump up. The end result is the average though, it has to be able to jump up pretty much to top speed (5M+) in order to get a high average.

It would be nice to have Speedtest configurable so that it could send & receive more data to get a better picture, but we don't optimise the network just to make Speedtest look good. :-)

I had once seen h+ appear in a particular Dunedin cbd spot during the testing period but no longer. Mind you it was early in the morning then but who knows if that makes a difference during testing.

This morning is sows this on my concrete office ... Although it is less than 2mbps later on

speedtest.net isn't an accurate way of measuring mobile speeds. RNC state changes mean radio resources are only allocated as required, and the short duration of these tests isn't enough to give a very accurate result. The results you see when also typically depend completely on the state your phone is in when you start the test - if you phone is already using HSDPA resources you'll see much lower ping times and higher speeds than what you will if it's attached to the rel 99 network and a state change needs to occur.

Salty, could you get someone at 2D to update http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/mobilebroadband/speeds

And also http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/why-2degrees/coverage should be updated to include 3G 900mhz when roaming on vodafone and on your new tier2 sites.
