I've tried googling/searching around forums but it seems the terms are too broad.

Can one get an Orcon Genius plan without the Genius Modem
a) Can the modem simply not be ordered (so no $5 rental) with the plan?
b) Can i plug in another modem for DSL (i assume so, i don't know how this would be locked)?
c) Can i connect something else to SIP and use that for VOIP instead?

b is the most important of course.

From the Orcon FAQ:
Q - Can I still buy Naked broadband from Orcon?

Orcon Genius IS naked broadband. We throw in a phone line that works over your broadband connection at no extra cost, so you have a phone number that's there if you need it. If you don't want to use it, just don't plug a phone in. Simple.

I'm sure you can still just run any regular modem for you DSL connection too.

The Orcon Genius modem does some tricky downloading of config and credentials from Orcon when it's connected. Without that modem you can't authenticate against Orcon and the connection won't work.

It's still just a DSL connection - regardless of whether the Genius is plugged in or not, you should be able to get authenticated DSL.

I want to get confirmation of this.

Chances are the chipset in the modem is trash, and when plugging into another router, im guessing that half bridge or something like Drayteks PPPoA to PPPoE won't be available, resulting in Double NAT.

I'm told if you can get through the support tree to someone who knows what they're doing, you can get your login + settings and setup your own DSL yourself. (Don't expect any help on HOW to do so, however)

2 steps backwards for you maybe but for the average joe its alot easier to setup out of the box and the isp can remote into it if there is a problem, so from the ISP's point of view they are great.

would not it be easier for everyone if they include a letter with username and password details too? or sent you an email with these.

Just in case users want to use more complex/simple/powerfull device they prefer?

Bit off topic, but does anyone know if the Genius modem can be used on another ISP ? Or does the custom firmware on it lock it so that it can only be used the Orcon network ?

There terms and conditions section explains this:

"ORCON BROADBAND REQUIRED: Orcon Genius can only be used with an Orcon Broadband Plan" - there maybe ways around this however the next point makes it uneconomical to do so...

"Note that you must immediately return your Orcon Genius hardware to Orcon upon cancellation of your Plan and if you fail to do so we may charge you an amount of $250."

Yeah I thought the devices were leased, however I just had a customer (I work for another ISP) call to try and setup a Genius device so I'm guessing he kept it.
Just curious if it would work really.

I want to get confirmation of this.

I'd also like confirmation, because if I go the Genius route and the Genius modem fails, I'd like to quickly swap over to my own DSL modem, rather than waiting hours for someone to even answer the support line. I'm not so worried about losing voice services, but losing web/e-mail/work vpn/skype... not to mention my kids submitting their Uni assignment via the net these days... that would be a more serious problem.
