I sometimes use the speed test site Speakeasy at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and I was noticing with speed tests to Seattle and San Francisco I was getting just over 9mbs/sec sometimes in Windows 7, how realiable of an indicator is this speed test? cause on speedtest.net I was getting much lower than that to the US.

Previously on Telecom's ADSL2+ would be lucky if I got over 3.5mb/sec to those same locations on that speakeasy site. Undecided I use a wireless connection to another PC which is only about 4 metres away from my room.

Looks like the are both hosted / made by Ookla so the results should be roughly the same.

I have heard that speedtest.net can be inaccurate often through.

Also you should always be doing speed tests via ethernet more so than wireless as you can get quite a bit of performance loss over wireless.

some of the speedtest.net sites are better than others. i assume that speakeasy is providing all of these and have decent bandwidth.

i did about 4 diff tests, and each seemed to max out my line.  (but it appears you have to reload page, or it tries to sell you 2x2 megabit internet plans in the US for $199/month.

hmm check out:

http://www.megapath.com/speedtestplus/

i get

Your Mean Opinion Score (MOS) is 4.32. The quality of your broadband connection and projected line quality is Good.

with 10 megabit sync.  it tests jitter etc too.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

with 1 download or parallel?  also los angeles could be faster than seattle

oh hangon, you were getting 1.6megabit?!  that's pathetic :)

# lookmeup www.gog.com
Rev 1: CA QC Montreal

looks like it's on the east side of Canada.. so could be slower.

try the new york test for a better comparison.

well it seems that they're not hosting files in the same place as their web site.

http://gog.com.s3.amazonaws.com/secure/teenagent/setup_teenagent.exe?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAIAVMKZ5K6VXNGU6A&Expires=1335746740&Signature=02NEd1ffYabkGWUw%2Fibwgcy3zpI%3D&extForIE=.exe

they appear to have some free downloads

# lookmeup gog.com.s3.amazonaws.com
Rev 1: US WA Seattle

and you're right, it is Seattle.. but amazon tends to be pretty bad for net speeds back to nz

from the US it's pretty fast.
# curl -O 'http://gog.com.s3.amazonaws.com/secure/teenagent/setup_teenagent.exe?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAIAVMKZ5K6VXNGU6A&Expires=1335746740&Signature=02NEd1ffYabkGWUw%2Fibwgcy3zpI%3D&extForIE=.exe'

(that's about 5.7 megabytes/sec)

and now it wont' let me download it frmo any more places heh.

yeah mercutio it says on the speakeasy site it is now part of megapath.

My results seem more in line tonight, 5.84 to San Fran on speakeasy and this on speedtest.net, will be slower at peak times no doubt.

hehe but wireless connection is not an accurate result as McGee already stated but with speed tests to christchurch and auckland results for me have been similar to telecom with about 15-16mbs/sec. I noticed in a recent  survey they said Snap had the slowest result out of NZ ISP's for loading web pages but are on the improve.

i wouldn't trust the truenet benchmarks.  i've done my own testing with the chrome benchmarking plugin, and cable is slower than dsl.  and yet they say it's consistently a lot faster.

it's a bit of a pita, and i don't know of any easy way to automate it.

If you can beat that result, that's 15/2 megabit telstraclear cable in Christchurch with 24ish msec ping to Auckland i seem to recall.
