As per NBR, you'll be able to use one data plan across multiple devices.

"Shared Data could, for example, work across a household with multiple gadgets, such as two smartphones, two tablets and a data stick," 2degrees' corporate affairs director Mat Bolland told NBR ONLINE.

Shared Data will cost $5 a month on top of an existing 2degrees on-account or pay monthly plan, plus $1 a month for every gadget added.

I'm aware of one other network about to launch this and rumors that you'll also be able to mix it up and use some of your fixed broadband data on a mobile. We might be looking at some cool innovation in the next few months!

Brilliant, about time one of the mobile telcos came out with this, and no suprise it's not one of the two large ones.

I'll give Telecom/Vodafone about a month to do the same.

I know Telecom have been doing shared minutes for a while now. But only on a 24 month plan, which is off putting.

If they managed to get shared data too, but with an open plan, I'd be interested

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Well, I don't know about Telecom, but Vodafone will find it difficult (read: inelegant, approximate and a pain in the neck to provision). One of the advantages of doing full real-time rating for all subscribers as we do is that we can mix and match prepay and postpay and share between them easily.

That's the reason we won the innovation award from Oracle. :-)

Telecom have a shot, since they use some parts of the same IN, but it is implemented differently so it might not work as well. In short I can see both of them doing it between postpay accounts, but not prepay (as the shared users may be on 2degrees). If sbiddle is right then Telecom might not be too far away, but I don't think Vodafone could have it in a month even if they wanted to.

it's pretty cool, but I think that practicalities will mean it won't work very well for most people.

If it is for sharing data accross my own devices, then I already have that functionality by making my phone into a wifi hotspot that my other devices (tablet, laptop) can use which does the exact same thing, but for free.

If it is for sharing data within my family with my hypothetical teenage kids - then I can imagine all sorts of issue with that where my kids would use all my data and either rack up gigantic overage charges or get my account shut down at my credit limit.
That sort of thing already happens with fixed broadband - and we are talking about at least 10GB+ plans there, most often 40GB+. Imagine how quick kids will chew through a 1GB plan!!

If I am going to share data accross multiple devies with my family, then I want to be able to allocate specific amounts to each person. Can the 2Degrees service do that, or can one person chew through all the data themselves and rack up overage?

I'm really excited about this development as it will allow me to share a single data package between my iPhone and iPad.

I'm assuming that another positive spin off is that I will effectively have both devices taken care of on the same bill rather than the current messy arrangement where the iPhone is on account and the iPad has to remain on a separate prepaid connection, with the latter suffering from the unreliable auto renewal system that has plagued prepaid connections for some time.

I get the argument about how I could just use my iPhone as a Wifi hotspot to serve any other device, but the reality is that enabling this when I need it is an extra hassle that I really don't want and would also leave me with no redundancy if a technical fault or flat battery kills my iPhone.

True, but that kills your battery. I ate 25% of my iPhone battery in 20 minutes doing that yesterday, with heavy data usage.

Further management abilities are coming in a later phase. For now it's primarily designed so that, as alasta says, your tablet, USB dongle and or other gadget(s) can share the data from your phone's account without the hassle of having to top them up.
