How do I setup my Orcon Genius web server

I see that there is an option to setup a web server with my orcon genius lite. Does this mean I could have my own website online with a custom domain name, like one bought from GoDaddy?

If so how exactly can I go about setting this up?

Hi Amy,

You will need a USB drive connected to the genius router.
The Genius 'Web Server' enables browser access to folders or web pages (you will need an index.html file in the root of the drive) on the attached USB drive.

Login to the Genius Router and select "Configure my USB port" then option 4 > "Set up my web server'

Follow the instructions to activate the web services for internal and external access.

To connect to your web server, open up a web browser on any computer on the internet and type in http://wan ip :8081

If you have a domain name, you will need to have the DNS records set to point your domain name to your Orcon supplied fixed IP. Depending upon who you purchased the domain name from will determine how you do this.

If there is no "index.html" file on the USB drive, then the web page displayed will be the folders and files on the hard drive.

If you're not familiar with writing web pages in HTML, then there are some pretty good open source HTML editors such as WebDwarf

Does the web server allow scripting languages e.g. PHP?

Thanks Doug, that's enough info for me to give it a go and was what I was wanting to hear. I can now purchase the domain I need. As far as I know this is only for static web pages, no php, databases or such on the basic web server. Which suits me, I've been limited to static web pages at times and don't mind using some java script and such to build what I need. I am familiar enough with html and css.

Zeon - there is this thread here that may shed some light on going beyound the basic web server. That interests me to, I'm not that clued up on it, but would like to be.

Be aware you'll probably have to get a dynamic DNS thing setup for your domain (It's do able if you run your own DNS servers or host them at a place that will let you do that.
Unless Orcon is giving out static IPs now? (I don't know if they are yet.. they definitely aren't doing IPv6 subnets yet!

I've had a fixed IP address from Orcon for more than 7 years. I switched to a genius plan last Wednesday and started using the new router on the day it arrived (Friday). My Voip phone will not be active until next week however my fixed IP Address has remained. Hopefully it will stay the same when my VoIP phone is activted next week.

Of note, when I witched from the Siemens router to the Genius router, my ADSL line speed increased 50%

If you have an old PC or laptop lying around and don't want to install Linux, then have a look at XAMPP for Windows

It is an open source project that has ported Apache Web server to windows and has the following services.

Apache 2.2.21
MySQL 5.5.16
PHP 5.3.8
phpMyAdmin 3.4.5
FileZilla FTP Server 0.9.39
Tomcat 7.0.21 (with mod_proxy_ajp as connector

I've been using it for more than 4 years.

Once you have your web service running on your PC, go to the Router Administration, Select Option 5 (Advanced Settings) and then option 10 > Port forwarding

Set port 80 to point to the IP Address of your web server

Genius IPs are not static however very rarely change even after a disconnection. If you honestly want a website/domain, Id use a hosting company as hosting on your own line can be slow (youre limited in outgoing speed - unless youre on fibre), if your line goes down, your site is offline.

Thank you everyone for your help, I appreciate the input. I got it going and am using a small web server called KF Web Server. I had a domain already and setup a sub domain to use instead of just forking out for a whole new domain. If I feel adventurous I may try out other web servers.

Hosting would be ideal, I just can't afford to.
