Hi all,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S II which is running ICS 4.0.3 for a few months now (it was running on 2.3.4 before). I work in Albany which happens to have excellent EDGE and HSDPA coverage in my office. I mean, when I am in the office, I get excellent coverage with both EDGE and HSDPA.

For months, while I'm in the office, when I have mobile data connection on, it would stay on the HSDPA network as long as it has signal (which is basiclly always the case). However, since about two weeks ago, it prefers EDGE instead of HSDPA, even I have full / 5-bar coverage with HSDPA. It is painful because it takes forever to load news, web pages etc.

I could work around it by switching my phone to use WCDMA mode only, but it is painful because I need to keep reminding myself to turn it back to AUTO mode when I finish work (because at home, I have good EDGE coverage, not HSDPA).

Can someone tell me what is wrong? Is this a problem with 2degrees?

The Local 3G site might have more load on it so the 3G coverage foot print shrinks (cell breathing WCDMA) and so the handset is passed down to GSM / EDGE, GSM does not suffer from breathing

Please note I am guessing that this may be the case

A cool solution could be to get a NFC tag and put one on your desk so you can just tap your phone on it to force it to WCDMA and again to return to normal (or some other way of changing it over, maybe when it connects to your work wifi?). I've been reading a bit about it recently and it's something I might look into a bit more, could be a solution if you wanted to go that far?

Or tasker could do this. Use location based task to automatically switch to wcdma and back again...

S2 doesnt have NFC only the S3 does.

There was a NFC S2 variant, but it wasn't sold officially in NZ.
