I'm considering jumping on the VSDL bandwagon and with the current deal snap is the obvious choice! Just have a couple of questions:

1) I understand when on VDSL + fritzbox you can do full bridging to a router of your choice. I really like my gargoyle router for QoS\bandwidth monitoring; would this work if setup with fritzbox just bridging? Would the gargoyle router (TL-WR1043ND) be underpowered at all on a VSDL connection?

2) I understand that the fritzbox has ports allowing you to plug a normal phone into it for use over VOIP, true or false? I know I would need to sign up with 2talk (or similar) account to do this, but would it work when bridging as above? (I'm as yet undecided on this approach or sipdroid)

If you're running a modem in bridge mode there is no way for an inbuilt ATA to work because it doesn't have any form of internet connection.

That and the bridge mode on the Fritz doesn't work / Has been discontinued in the latest firmware revision.

You'd be better off with a Draytek or something along those lines that has been proven to support full bridging.
Plus maybe a PAP2T or similar ATA for VoIP.

Well that is sad indeed. I suspected the ATA wouldn't work, didn't know the bridge mode had gone though! The advantage of the fritzbox was of course the price; I'm guessing there aren't any other VDSL that will bridge for around that $160 pricepoint?

What are the QoS options on the fritzbox like if I didn't use the gargoyle router?

You could just put the TP Link in the DMZ of the Fritzbox so all ports are open the the TP Link.

However a user/client/machine behind the TP Link would be going through double NAT which may or may not be a problem for you.

So basically either:

1: Go with the Fritzbox as the all in one and ditch the TP Link losing whatever features the Fritzbox doesn't have that Gargoyle Router does. Presumably the Friztbox does have QoS and traffic monitoring features but probably not as good as Gargoyle's.

OR

2: Go for the Zyxtel VDSL2 modem in PPPoE bridge to the TP Link plus standalone ATA for voip.

Unfortunately the Zyxel is about $300.

ummm, could he not just get the fritzbox, and downgrade the firmware to the version that supported bridging??

Sure if he wants, But take my warning, Myself along with many others have spent hours trying to get this to work to no avail.
There's one GZ user that has made it work but I'm unsure how.

Everyone seems to bag double NAT, but I've run it for years and never had a single issue or been able to measure any performance penalty whatsoever (and believe me, I've looked!). The only issue I've heard of is with VPNs, but a lot of modems have a passthrough option for this.

Double NAT breaks lots of things that require specific IP's in headers. VoIP is a classic example, and unless you're going to spend time setting up VoIP specifically in a double NAT environment it will always fail, typically with no audio since it can't be routed.

I guess you're referring to a SIP trunk? I have run VFX behind a double NAT setup for years with no issues.

I've had my Fritzbox for the weekend now and am loving it - so reliable! I have a Uniden cordless plugged into it and am using 2talk - clear as a bell. The admin is very good too.
