Well I have waiting long enough for Orcon to come out with non Genius plans.

 

I have had really good service from Orcon, had few of the problems some people have had. On the whole I would give then 8.5 out of 10.

 

But as I have a monitored alarm and it will cost $400 to change it to a VOIP connection to be able to us Genius, I’m moving on.

 

I can get 30gb more data for $30 less than I’m paying now with Telecom.

 

It will be interesting how smooth (or not) the move goes.

YEA!

I've waited ages for Countdown to come out with the brand of beans that I really like. It was going to cost me $400 to import a carton of them, so I'm moving to New World. I can get 30 more carrots for 0.30c less than Countdown have them too.

I'm just worried about how smooth (or not) the trolleys at New World are.

$400 to change the monitored alarm? Would be interested to know what this was covering - there are many houses in NZ with monitored alarms on passive dial, and this sounds like a real barrier to switching...

Moving your alarm to IP or GPRS/3G monitoring is an inevitable move, however much of the alarm industry is still stuck in the dark ages in denial that their cheap alarm concentrators are ultimately going to be doorstops and they will actually have to spend money moving into the 21st century.

If you move to UFB at any stage in the future you're going to end up with a VoIP voice service that potentially won't support IR Fast or ContactID based alarms.

IMHO you're better off upgrading your alarm now and moving to an alarm company that isn't going to rip you off $400 for a $200 job.

Don't forget Sky TV also, their boxes can't "phone home" over VoIP connections (unless someone has managed to make it work), yet there is still that ethernet jack on the MySky boxes...

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but what brands support IP Monitoring? We have moved to VOIP Recently (Nightmare) and have considered replacing our alarm with something better, may as well have this functionality? Is there a specific standard I need to consider? How does it work if the power goes out?

We have a Bosch alarm that has dial out via GPRS. The Cell part is another box with its own battery. Added smoke alarm and remotes to the install. Here in CHCH it costs us 23 per month for monitoring and having 2degrees sim card we use $20 about every 1.5 months.
