Hello,

I'm looking at making the move to VDSL2 for the better upstream speeds. I have a master splitter and an internal wire going straight to the DSL jackpoint, I think my stats are pretty good although I'm not certain which attenuation figure is most important?

Line stats:

Speedtest from now:

I can't use the snap address search because my address is 'x The Fairway, Whakatane'. If I put in 'The' for street name and 'Fairway' for type it doesn't find me. If I put in an address around the corner it says downstream 18.8 - 24.2 and upstream 8.3 to 11.7. But it also says for ADSL2 upstream 1.3Mbit whereas I only get ~950k

Also to clarify, if I signup to naked bb at home and make existing phone connection 'no existing phone' when I do have an existing analogue phone line, I assume that will just mean that the existing phone line continues after my DSL changes over?

Your connection should be fine.

If you sign up for naked VDSL and say you have no existing phone the service order will either be rejected or your phone will be disconnected.

Snap are warning against having a POTS line with VDSL because they say it impairs speeds. This is just simply not true. I have just recently got a client signed up with Kiwilink who have so far been really good. The service isn't connected yet, just waiting for the order to go through, but the guys you talk to are very helpful and their prices are very comparable to Snap's.

I think you'll find that's mainly so that the new customer doesn't have to pay for the full install.

It's not because it impairs speeds, it's because they've clearly made the decision to only deliver naked connections in the hope of saving people $200 for a connection as a master filter is mandatory for VDSL2 with POTS.

The problem with this logic is that a master filter is essential whether you have POTS on or off unless you only have a single jackpoint connected straight to the demarc.

The Fairway works with the Telecom Wholesale address checker, but you should be fine there. I'm actually just around the corner from you on Waiewe St, about 3 pixels outside of the green area :(

I think you are dead right in that they are trying to save customers money. But like you say a splitter is a must anyway so I think they will end up with alot of customers with low speeds due to crap wiring.

The real problem I have with them is that two of their call center staff told me that 'I will get bad speeds with a POTS connection' which I know is just totally false. So they are obviously not educated on what they are selling to their customers. They need to just say we do naked vdsl only and not make stuff up. For this reason only I don't recommend them for VDSL.

I have my broadband with Snap and it works great. So I have nothing at all against them. Just don't like the lack of knowledge the call center seems to have regarding VDSL.

If you want to keep your current line you'll need to request a full install of a new naked connection on a new pair. Chorus will visit and install your connection to a new jackpoint, which will cost $199 or $399.

Unless of course Snap will provision VWS with POTS on, but I'm pretty certain somebody on here has confirmed that they won't do this.

I had the opposite experience. I explained that I required POTS and asked if I could have this even though not advertised. They agreed that I could, but warned about the master filter install. (which I'm fine with even allowing the $400 for install I'm still saving money in the first year over my old ISP and with more data and higher speed). I signed up for the '@home' package and added notes to confirm that I wanted the VDSL and router on two year contract to get it at $160. Thet were extremely helpful and and stayed on the phone while I was completing form in case of any problems. All is going through fine with the exception of delay on the part of Chorus who are installing a new card in the local cabinet. This is due to take place around the 24th. I'm currently been put on the standard ADSL plan connecting at approx 12.5mbps donwn, .85mbps up, so I'll report back later in the month once all is connected.

Gutted, I just looked at the wholesale/chorus map, VDSL2 is available pretty much everywhere in our area (and down hillcrest and seaview road) except your street! I guess you are using the same cabinet as me down by the playground... you're just too far away... :o

I think I'll go ahead and sign up at the end of the month/start of next month.

I just spent some money on internal re-wiring including relocating the DSL jackpoint to a cupboard (closer to the demarc also) so its a bit annoying to know I will probably have to pay another install fee.

Yeah I'm on that cabinet. I logged my place as a "demand point" with Wholesale back in 2010 (and so did one of my neighbours) but they still built the cabinet out of range in 2011 :(
