Hi, so my dad has decided he wants to spend less per month on landline and phone, so i suggested orcon genius.

to balance out all the complaints about how 'bad' the genius is, who's had few or no problems with it?

I moved to Orcon genius when I had enough of my HORRIBLE connection speed (I was with Orcon).

With the help of Geekzone, I managed to get this sorted. The customer reps on the phone were very friendly, especially since I am the account holders son. When we confirmed the plan, my dad got it wrong. He rang up and they changed it without a hitch.

We had a scheduled date with Orcon for the work on our line to be done, as well as moving to Genius. The modem was sent out promptly, and both the work on our line and VoiP had been done by the time I got home.

I have had my bad experiences with Orcon but this the most recent one.

One thing I have praise for Orcon was the speed I got. Other than that everything was awful.

If you are lucky - you will be set up and everything will be perfect from the start with good speeds (like mine)

If you are unlucky - things wont work and no one from orcon support will help you very well and will have to keep ringing back to get things moving forward (like my boss which I recommended to orcon and is having trouble and is now closing his account)

Basically, all good here with only a couple of niggles that were sorted.

I changed to Genius a couple weeks ago from a POTS plan with Orcon, and things have remained great.

I haven't had the same poor experiences that others seem to have had.

A few weeks ago our connection went down and the usual resets and restarts didn't fix it so I called them: phone answered straight away, reset from their end and all was working.

When we first changed to Genius I emailed them asking for interleaving to be switched off. Done in a couple hours.

I noticed that Call Waiting wasn't switched on, so replied to the earlier email and that too was fixed in a couple hours.

I get about a 14.5Mb/s connection and it doesn't deviate much from that. I don't get slower speeds at peak time, so video streaming, YouTube, etc, can be watched at any time of the day or night.

Our area is getting fibre in March next year and I'll be able to change over to a new UFB contract from my existing Genius contract without charge.

So overall, couldn't be happier.

I was with them for 18 months and found them great to be with.
I did have a couple of minor hitches but they were quickly fixed by there CSR.

I joined Orcon just over 2 months ago. As I am close to the central exchange was able to go onto their LLU service, Orcon@Home+. Have normal phone with ADSL service & got bonus data as on the LLU. The service went online on the day arranged and at the speed I was expecting.

Had one fault with calls not coming in (which turned out to be my personal phone and not service) which they looked into in a speedy manor. I logged job via web site (have heard phone contact not that good) and within minutes of sending it, saw my modem reboot as they done a remote reset. Then got email back saying to retest.

So far I am very happy with service. Avg speed is 18Mbps.

I've been on Genius for 7 months and am really happy with it. No downtime and decent speeds. More importantly they tripled my data allowance and cut $10 off the price.

Orcon technical support isn't the best but their speeds are very good.

Switched to Orcon Genius Lite about a month ago; just finished my first billing cycle.

Initial setup was smooth; and everything seems to more-or-less work. Had a little hiccup trying to get my voicemail sorted out; but the helpdesk staff were able to resolve with no major problems (although I found ringing at 7pm didn't get me very far - 4:30pm weekdays ok, and 9pm weekdays ok, but not early evening!)

For full disclosure, I've had a glitch or two with my Genius Lite router which are documented on this thread:

however, a discussion with the tech support guys (via email this time - and very responsive on the weekend), and the dropouts seems to have been fixed for the moment.

Basically, I'm happy; my combined bill is slightly less than I was paying Telecom+previous ISP; my download speed has gone from 5.5Mb/s to about 16Mb/s; my monthly cap went from about 40Gb (capped daily) to 200Gb; upload speed increased from about 160Kbs to just under 2Mbs; everything seems to work.

And I've finally got Caller-ID, after about 10 years of trying to get Telecom to provide this service - they couldn't, and I live in a fairly new Wellington suburban area too...

With Genius and so far very few issues compared to other providers.

My only complaints are -
When I first signed up they got my user name wrong and when I tried to get it changed they said they couldn't, not a major I guess.

A few drop outs and lack of communication.

I'm on Genius lite and while it took a little while to come online I haven't really had any issues since and speeds are good.

I get VOIP and 200GB for $99 a month

The speed is very good, but their billing is very bad, technical issues are usually resolved pretty quickly.
The genius phone cuts out a bit, but is better than xnet in my experience with voip.

I have been overcharged with all sorts of things over the last year, most of it has been credited back, and some things I don't understand, were never credited back. If you change over to orcon you might want to keep an eye on your bill, or they may add weird amounts here and there, my bills have always been inconsistent from them, their last attempt was for an extra $100, however, it WAS credited back after I called them.

Thanks for all the responses, I've decided I'm going to advise the man with the money to go with orcon, i was thinking about snap + 2talk but their recent plan changes means that orcon would give us more data than snap, just gotta wait for the contract to end with slingshot now :P

No problems at all. Consistently high speed and low latency. Tons of data and not expensive.
