I have a Genius box and am waiting for the switchover.  I have had a look around the Orcon site and in here for old threads but none seems to precisely cover this subject.

Currently my house is wired with a master filter with an unfiltered feed going to a specific jackpoint where my ADSL router is plugged into.  The Genius router will replace it.  The filtered feed goes to the rest of the house (5 or so jackpoints).  It would seem obvious to me that if I take out the filtered connection then effectively the wiring in the rest of the house is now isolated from the outside line but otherwise intact.  Why cant I connect it to the 'phone' (green) jack on the Genius box and therefore be able to continue to use the existing phones?

I am also wondering why a fax wont work.  I occasionally want to send a fax (ie never receive one - dont have a fax number).  IIRC the Genius emulates a PSTN so surely this should be possible (but maybe not supported)?

I can't talk to the wiring side of things, but I can tell you that I send faxes from my computer fax modem through Genius with no problem at all :)

Fax over VoIP either works or doesn't - and there are plenty of things to cause issues.

If your VoIP provider and ATA support T.38 then things will work well. If your VoIP provider supports G.711 passthru then things will also work well. Faxing typically fails however because some form of codec transcoding occurs which breaks everything.

Luckily then, in the Orcon Genius router we can see it supports G.711 :)

Support for G.711 is no guarantee that G,711 is maintained all the way to the PSTN interconnect.
