Orcon are offering a deal via Mercury Energy that seems like a good one.

Question is, is the quality of line, broadband, up time, blar blar any good or will it be a nightmare?

Cheers

Can you provide some details on the offer? Even better would be a link.

Unlimited calling (national landline)
30GB data
Free voicemail, caller ID, call waiting

$70 per month for 12 months, $75 after that.

First two months Free for broadband portion of bill.

I'm really interested in the DSL quality or service...heard it was average at best and that speeds were also average compared to others.

I just switched to Genius recently from a normal line with them. Been with them over a year never have issues, get 14.5Mb/s download at all times, no peak time slowdowns, no slow international traffic. I'm connected to the Takapuna exchange.

Is Genius the fibre setup? If so, I can't get that in Birkdale.

Yes Genius is their modem that is UFB ready, but it's not exclusively for UFB and still works on normal DSL connections. We're still on DSL in Takapuna, but we're getting fibre in March next year, so by having Genius I'm already set to go once fibre goes live in our area.
