I was contemplating moving from Orcon to Telecom to get a better plan and price. Telecom $120gb looked pretty good and Orcon have been WAY to slow with better non-Genius plans.

I have been very happy with Orcon service having been with them since not long after they started.

I had good speed and had good CS for any issues I had (Although telling me to factory reset the modem when I couldn’t get a PPP connection is a bit over the top).

I have a monitored alarm so without changes to my very old alarm; Genius was not going to be an option.  After talking to my alarm company they suggested a radio modem (basically a GSM connection).

The cost of this would be recouped in about 10 months of Genius savings.

I took the plunge and got the alarm changed. This went relatively smoothly.

Here is my experience with Orcon.

Friday 10th of Aug 14:30 I rang Orcon. They answered in 3 rings (so far so good). The CS rep was very helpful and answered most of the non technical questions i had. I went with the 200gb plan and Genius light option on an 18 mth contract.

About 30 mins after placing the order I got an email confirming the change.

16:00 got an email saying the changeover would happen on the 15th Aug (Weds) by 18:00.

Monday 13th Aug 09:00 – Modem was del to my work.

14:30 unpacked the modem and fired it up. I noticed that it was refurbished and not new.  Changed its ip address, added my Orcon logon, and poked some holes in the fire wall for different apps.

I then read the instructions, the bit were it said don’t plug it in yet as it will auto configure when the change happens.. Doh! RTFM

Wed 15th – sometime in the afternoon my phone stopped working. Internet was still fine so didn’t really care.

18:30 checked for an email saying change had happened, nothing. Checked the website and my plan has changed to Genius 200.

Thurs 16th – 09:30 still no email. Rang tech support on my cell. New system told me to hang up and they would ring me back... sure they would. 30 sec after hanging up they rang back. Got straight through to a Tech person.

He checked and said the change had happened and apologised for the lack of email or text and said to plug it in.  I confessed that I had a wee play with the modem; he said if it didn’t work just factory default it and all should be fine.

Plugged it in and internet all good. Plugged a phone into the port and got a dial tone. Made a couple of calls, all fine.

Over all I would say it went as well as it could have. Thanks Orcon.

Problem with being T3 support, I only get to deal with horror stories at work - I know statistically these are outliers but it is very reassuring to see someone's experience of it actually going right :)  Thanks for sharing.

Good to hear this went well. People will need to get more used to major phone porting with the UFB so good to see the process is working smoothly on DSL.
