Some time in the last few hours my internet connection speed has dropped from a 240kb/s download rate to 70kb/s. It doesn't seem to matter where I'm downloading from it's all quite slow. I looked on the Slingshot website but the only known fault isn't related to my issue. I'm hoping this is just because it's Friday night but I've never noticed this happening before.

Cheers.

modem stats?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Good grief I'd never even thought to look at the modem. Every time I look try to go to traffic statistics it just comes back with a 'connection closed by remote server' message. Everything else looks pretty normal including (given my rural location):
Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 800
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 1952

Also it reminded me that a few times over the last couple of weeks I've lost the connection to my modem and had to turn it off and back on. Must be time to get a new one, although I've only had it for about a year. Oh well, I want an N600 one anyway.

edit - The connection was only lost from the PC through ethernet, my wifi connected phone and PS3 still worked so it could even just be the cable.

About 20km west of Christchurch. I guess you'd call it rural Rolleston. It's not very far away from the city at all but it's quite a low population out here and I don't think we're leading the way for an upgraded phone line any time soon.

Ok so the drop in speed might just be congestion at the local exchange or are your connected to Conklin?

It could very well be at the local exchange as it's currently full and there are no plans to upgrade that either. I was lucky to move in here when I did. I've just tried to do a random download and I'm back up to full speed. Must've just been because it was Friday evening, I've just never noticed it happening before. Thanks for your help.

Also out of curiosity what's Conklin?

A Conklin is the older type of exchange used.  In a nutshell, they are poos in terms of performance.  All the newer exchanges have flash equipment in them allowing for ADSL2+/VDSL...etc.
