Hi, just looking into moving from Slingshot to Snap as our ISP at home and see that if I sign up for a couple of years then I can get one of these Fritzboxes.

Currently we have a separate modem and wireless router ... pretty basic and 3-4 years old at least but they seem to work okay. (Reason for looking to move is a degradation of speed in the evening, and we a re rural and a fair way from the exchange so we are dropping from not a great speed anyway)

My query is around the fritzbox and whether its worth me going for one of these. Its a home setup, not an office..but... often 2-3 people accessing the internet and they can be quite demanding if things are not right.

Could a Fritzbox make things quicker, and if so, the 7340 or the 7390?

Any thought on these welcome.

I would say your distance from the exchange is going to be the limiting factor here. That is assuming of course that your internal wiring is up to scratch.

Are you looking at an ADSL or VDSL service from Snap?

I have heard that with the VDSL service your distance from the exchange can have quite a big effect on the final speed.

As far as the Fritzboxes go, they seem to review very well, especially the 7390 which as you mentioned you can get for very little on a 24 month contract.

If the only issue at the moment is speed drops in the evening then changing ISP may bring a better speed. I am currently with Vodafone and speeds change very little between the day/night, I understand Telecom is the same. I am looking at changing to Snap though as neither of the other major players mentioned offer VDSL at my address.

I also seem to recall that Snap have a lot of commercial customers which are mainly using the connection during the day which in theory would mean the network is less restricted during the hours you mentioned.

Just ADSL.

Have heard some good reports about Snap.. so might be a good time to change... and then I saw the Fritzbox deal.

I'm on their naked ADSL service and have had no issues whatsoever since I moved from Vodafone in June/July. For what it's worth, I'm happy with the value.

I'm on VDSL with Snap, and using the supplied Fritrzbox (7340) - zero problems, extremely stable, many features - I even threw away the DECT base station as it has one built in.

No hesitation in recommending it to anyone.

The Fritz!box is IMHO the best all and one device on the market. The functionality can be delivered with other devices, but for an all in one device it can't be beaten.

7340 vs 7390 really just depends on whether you want Gigabit ports of are happy with fast ethernet. I have a 7390 and fritz!fon myself that I'm still aiming to flick off when I find some time to finish my review.

Doesn't the 7340 have 2 gigE ports (mine appears to - though out of the box one appears to be configured to 100M "green mode") So isn't it more a question of 2 vs 4 LAN ports?

Its a great router. Easily the best I have tried so far other than a known issue with the web interface when snap ship it preconfigured with the VDSL settings and you try the ADSL ones in it. Factory reset sorts that out and reconfig from there.

Added my 2talk and italk lines to it, added several dect phones, perfect call quality, selective control over which handset rings with with incoming voip number meant I could turn off the asterisk box since that was all I used it for.

At least one lan port is gig, I just have it going into a switch for the network. The extra ports are no use to me but the '90 also has some inbuilt storage and simultanious dual band which both may be worth paying for.

hmmm this I didn't realise.. - which one is which? and also can the 100m one be reconfigured do you know?

ive had a few routers in the past. 3 linksys ones, a netgear one (returned as wouldnt keep a good connection, this was high end router bought earlier this year), and the fritzbox.

the fritzbox is by far the best at keeping a internet connection, i get regular disconnects, one at midnight every night (likely due to home alarm system), the linksys would often take an hour to come back online (even after manual reboot) the netgear would be down still the next morning, the fritzbox biggest down time has been less than 5 minutes, so its great in that regard.

couple things i dont like about it however
- only 2 ethernet ports
- wifi has crap range (ive had to use one of the old linksys routers as a additional access point)

but in regards for internet its great, i had to buy it for $350 odd, pricey but i was fed up with the disconnects.

Ahh I was thinking the 7340 was just FE. The 7390 has 4 GE ports however, not just the two. Obviously if you're using an Ethernet WAN connection one is used for the WAN.
