Hey guys I live in wellington and I'm planning on switching to Orcon unlimited deal and have just a few questions

1. If I switch to Orcon will I keep my current home phone number?

2. Will I have to use a modem they provide? can I use my own modem? do I have to pay for their modem? I don't understand what the "Orcon Genius" is about.

3. What are the speeds like? I currently get around 17mb downlaod and 1mb upload with Vodafone.

Thank you.

Thank you.

1. I do believe you can keep your phone number when moving ISPs.

2. If you go onto their genius plan, yes you must use their modem and I believe you rent it. You must return it when your contract is up. Orcon genius uses VoIP technology, basically uses the internet for your calls. Your landline plugs into the genius modem instead of the wall.

3. I am currently getting similar speeds to you. Modem Page. Speed tests show similar results. Bearing in mind I have no "prior" results to show you. Maybe someone else can post them.

Thanks for the response, what is the difference between Genius and a normal connection in terms or reliability and speed? is Genius any faster? Also do Orcon do normal connections or only Genius?

Hi,

Whether you can get a standard "phone line" on our new plans depends on whether you are near an exchange we have our equipment installed at.

You can find out what you're eligible for by entering your address in the signup wizard.  If you get stuck, let me know and I can point you in the right direction :)

Genius service is no different really to a standard "internet and phone line" service, except that you plug your phone into the modem instead of straight into a wall jack, and you have to use the Genius modem with it, instead of your own modem.

Hope that helps!

Cheers

Dan

Thanks for the clarification Dan, however how would this work in a large house that has many rooms upstairs and downstairs and needs multiple telephones?

My son has just switched to Orcon unlimited. After talking to him I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Was promised for Oct 01. After several fone calls they started this week. No Internet or fone for two days, Got Internet but fone could only out call. Currently no one on Telecom can call him. OK from Orcon and 2Talk numbers. He doesn't expect to get normal incoming service until sometime early next week.

Genius works only with (cordless) DECT phones or a phone.

With normal house wiring every jackpoint is 'live'.  However if you have just one jackpoint live (for the Genius to plug into) then terminate all the other jackpoints at the Genius phone plug then this should work.  Ther alternative is simply to replace your phones with DECT phones.
