I'm hoping someone may be able to offer some advice on what my options are... I have recently moved to a block near Woodhill and I have terrible speeds and ping times. I've been testing using speedtest.net over the last month and I seldom see local ping times below 200ms, and sometimes as high as 1200ms to Orcon. At night, my access grinds to a halt. Day or night I can't watch a Youtube clip without buffering every half minute. I've had to cancel my quickflix subscription as it was unusable. I have logged a call with Orcon 4 days ago but as expected I haven't heard anything back.

I've tried doing an isolation test and it doesn't make any difference. I've tried 3 different modems. Nothing seems to make a difference.

Here are my line stats as reported by my TPLink modem. The error rates are very low so I assume that means I don't have a line problem. Hopefully someone can confirm if they look ok. From my limited knowledge they seem fine. Note that the stat's all need to be divided by 10 (as they are 0.1 dB):

Good chance out that way you are connected to a Conklin dslam which have very limited back haul over a few E1's

Your line rate looks fairly reasonable, but is only connecting at ADSL (not 2+) speeds.

That, combined with being in Woodhill, it's likely you are on a Conklin (basically, old slow technology). Perhaps someone who works in that area can confirm?

If this is the case, really all you can do to get the existing connection faster is to escalate with your ISP to see if more bandwidth can be added to it.

Alternatively, would you could look at some of the other internet options - RBI, 3G etc.

That would confirm my gut feel. Is there any way I can put pressure on Orcon to find out when they plan to upgrade the backhauls?

It's not Orcon hardware to upgrade

I would say the hardware is now EOL and no further $$ would be spent on it by Chorus

This all makes sense but I would hope it would also mean they would have plans to upgrade the infrastructure. Surely they would be able to connect all the shiney new fibre they have laid to increase the back-haul capacity?

My 3G speeds are quite good but the higher data costs are putting me off moving the whole house to 3G.

Is fibre running up that way? last I saw they had reached Kumeu

Your best bet will be to look at the Chorus RBI site to see if/when you'll be upgraded. The vast majority of Conklin's are being replaced as part of the RBI upgrade over the next few years.

If they are running a 24hr line test, usual procedure is you will call them back and they will let you know the result. In this case it may make no difference, but call anyway and see what they advise for the next step if any.

My Father is in the same situation however hes actually connected to an exchange and hes 8km from it only able to get about 1.2mbit I can't believe it acutally works. (Also gets 4.5mbit 3G with voda)

You would find that in most cases if a school is been upgraded the to UFB the cabinet will be missed as I don't believe it has any Ethernet ports so its limited to 8mbit ATM backhaul even if it did though chorus would not want to spend anymore money on these slow devices.

Whats the numbers of houses around your area? if your in a reasonably populated area you might have a higher chance of being upgraded.... but its theres just 3 or 4 places around you the chances are slim.
