After looking around to change providers (long story) settled on the Orcon $99 plan as being best bang for my buck.

Great start with a couple of phone calls to very helpful people as I made inquiries last week to choose a new provider.  All good.

Today I have spoken with 4 people from Orcon, and have 2 different stories from each.  The last 2 calls were due to them not returning my calls when they didn't know the answer to my questions.  While not posting details the original incentives offered to join have also been rescinded (grrr)

So while the recent experience screams incompetence and trouble ahead, forcing a reconsideration of where to take my business, I am hoping someone here (Orcon?) can offer some final answers:

1. When the 12 or 24 month fixed term ends, and you do nothing, do you just continue as a month by month customer, or are you forced to re-sign for another fixed period or be disconnected.  ( 1 helpdesk person says you just carry on, while 3 say you will be disconnected if you don't re-sign)

2. Can you plug a HDD into the modem thereby creating a basic NAS setup, with data available via wi fi? (2 say yes and 2 say no)

Cheers

1) It will just carry on. No need to resign for a new term

2) Pretty sure yes.

Hope it works out better than my sons attempt the other week to switch to Orcon and the Genius plan. 2 days of no internet and a week of no inbound calls from outside Orcon's network..

2) I've got my HDD plugged into the genius modem. Unfortunately its painfully slow, so don't expect too much.

Yeah, that's what scares me.  I know they must get it right sometimes...don't they?

Hmmm...it was an added bonus, but nice if it worked well. Cheers for the feedback.

I can confirm this as as an Positive YES

2. Can you plug a HDD into the modem thereby creating a basic NAS setup, with data available via wi fi? (2 say yes and 2 say no)

I currently have my 1TB WD Elements HDD plugged into it and it shows up in the network as BobLite ( I spose I could rename it but I can't be arsed ) but it does work perfectly fine even my partners lappy See's it and she is connected via the wifi

although throughput is rather degraded I was getting 1.3MBps write and 3.0MBps read and thats for large files 300MB+
