Hi all,

I've just switched to Orcon Genius (Unlimited of course) from Slingshot, today and am having problems using my switch with the Genius router.

Simply put, I don't seem to get any Internet access if i plug my computer into the switch. It used to work fine with my old TPL modem and I'm wondering if there's anything special i need to do to get it to work with Genius.

It's a simple TP-Link Gigabit switch (TL-SG1005D). I use it to get gigabit speeds (or so between my media server -> desktop PC.

Shouldn't be anything special. I assume that you do have the switch plugged into one of the LAN ports, and not the port designated for WAN? <br />

That's what i thought, I plugged it into LAN1, but it doesn't seem to work. I'll play around with it more.

Edit: Nothing seems to show up in the DHCP list at all.

Edit2: I'm running 1202 version, I've seen people on the forum talk about 14XX as well, But icouldn't find any instructions to upgrade ie where to find updated firmware, does anyone know?

Oddly, there's no LAN indicators on the modem itself, or even lights on the ports (even for the working one). I checked the admin/configure page for the modem, and I can't see anything in the status or otherwise pages to actually check if it's finding a link.

If you're not getting link, that will be a problem.

The switch says it's auto uplink sensing, so there should be no need for a crossover cable or anything fancy.

I know we have staff etc using switches on their Genius routers OK.

Tried a different cable?

Also watch out that sometimes the sockets on the Genius can be very "stiff" (depending on the cable) and sometimes require a fair bit of force before the cable will click into place.

Try a laptop etc. on the same ports on the Genius AND the switch. You should at least get a link light.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for replying. Oddly, there's no Link light on even the cable which IS working (Ie the one to the computer I'm on right now). Could it be a faulty genius modem if there is indeed supposed to be a link light?

I'll try a laptop and another PC tomorrow morning see if there's any further

Edit: There's a link light on the switch side. But nothing on the Orcon side (As mentioned above, at all)

I see, did not realise you were getting link light on the switch side.

There is only a single LAN light on the Genius, it's an icon with 2 PC's on it, should be lit up blue if you have anything plugged into any LAN ports.

Having said that, if a laptop works on any given LAN port then so should your switch.

Not sure on your switch specs, but its its expecting 1Gig ports then that could explain why laptops work and the Genius doesn't.

Have you tried any other ports on the genius modem? Ports 1, 2 and 3 are LAN ports (port 4 is reserved for UFB uplink)

My old modem was also 100 and it did work.

Edit: Just tried a different port and then rebooted the modem. It seems to be working now!

Log into your Genius Modem 10.1.1.1 and check where it says Modem is currently configured for: that it is not set to UFB if you are on broadband over copper as the UFB option turns LAN port 1 into a wan port if you have fibre which is the port the run a ethernet cable from the ONT to Genius unit. If that is not the case then i would recomend contacting orcon as your unit is possibly faulty.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the input. I believe the OP has solved their issue already, but I wanted to clarify a couple of points.

In fact LAN port 4 is used a WAN port if UFB mode is set. On new modems shipping there is a blank inserted in this port marked "Reserved for Fibre" - which can be removed for a UFB connection.

Also, UFB mode will automatically fallback to ADSL if UFB connection is not present, so it's best to have it set to UFB regardless (it is by default in the newer firmwares). This way if/when you get UFB in the future, the Genius will be ready-to-go and you won't need to change a thing.

I was always thinking it was LAN 1 because when they upgraded mine ages ago i had to change the ethernet cable from 1 to 2 as 1 stopped working. I just tried LAN 1 on my unit and it is working must have been a bug with older firmware or something odd.
