Hi,

2degrees has recently built a tower here in Whakatane so it's now cost-effective for me to move over. I picked up a SIM yesterday and have had nothing but trouble.

First, I put the SIM into my iPhone 4S, turned it on ... and got No Service. After 2-3 minutes this finally changed to "2degrees" so I called 200 as requested on the packaging only to get three short beeps and the message "call failed". The phone dropped back to No Service then a few seconds later changed to "Voda NZ".

I called 200 again and got the same three beeps and "call failed". At this point I turned the phone off and put my Telecom SIM back in. That was yesterday.

I've just tried it again. I put the 2d SIM in, turned on the phone, and got No Service again. This time it went to "Voda NZ" after a minute or so (with a coworker's iPhone showing "2degrees" at the same time). I tried calling 200 again and instead of getting setup prompts as indicated in the documentation, it just tried to connect me to the helpdesk. However, once I terminated the call the phone changed over to "2degrees" and has stayed on it since.

I entered the APN settings and at about this time received a text from +200 saying that I'm out of credit. I was under the impression that a $10 SIM was supposed to include $10 of credit so this surprised me. A little Googling indicated that I need to register for Your 2degrees before I can get this so I went to the 2d site and started following the instructions.

I entered my number and the password that they texted me, and was asked to pick a new password and hint. I did this, clicked Next, and got HTTP 500 (internal server error). At that point I gave up and decided to rant on Geekzone :)

2degrees have been conducting some major systems updates overnight - definitely would impact the website availability at the time of your post. Should be OK now.

Depending on your SIM (where and when it was purchased and which type it is) you probably wont have credit - the $10 for registering for your 2degrees was a promo from approx 2 years ago.

I don't think I have been much help, try logging into your 2degrees again. To check your balance ring *100*1# and it will give you your balance onscreen

Hi Behodar

As Toiletduck says we were doing some changes to the system last night that would affected account activations, online services and top-ups. Things are up and running now so you should be good to go.

You will need to top-up to use your services however.

The normal $10 SIM doesn't come with any credit but the $20 MicroSIM which you'll need in your iPhone 4S has 100MB of National Data included.

Here's a list of our SIMs

Double check your settings here.

We are building in Whakatane so you should see 2degrees on your phone in that area. Just a heads up - if you go outside of our canopy onto Vodafone and notice data disconnects please double check your settings. The APN 'Internet' may have dropped off.

Hi,

I've successfully registered with Your 2degrees now but I'm a little confused around SIMs; I have a $10 micro SIM (from The Warehouse) which appears to work but you said above that I need a $20 one. Am I going to run into trouble with a $10 one?

Nah, you should be all good.
If it is in your phone and picking up 2degrees then you are good to go. As ^POB says - you need to topup.

I hope your ongoing experience of 2degrees improves after this initial hiccup

Other question would be, if the 2degrees signal has only just shown up, has 2degrees unlocked the tower from its initial test phase ?

Our multi-brand dealers may charge differently from the RRP. If you PM your number so I can check?

It's not an official MBB Zone just yet. We're still in the building and optimization stage in Whakatane but if customers find they're getting a steady 2degrees signal our MBB packs will work.

I didn't realise that 2d hasn't officially launched here yet, and I think that I may need to wait until things are more stable as I'm getting "No Service" again. I'll keep an eye open for when it's actually launched and will give it another go then.

Behodar: I didn't realise that 2d hasn't officially launched here yet, and I think that I may need to wait until things are more stable as I'm getting "No Service" again. I'll keep an eye open for when it's actually launched and will give it another go then.

It's coming soon, in the meantime you'll be able to connect to either our 'test' signal or our roaming partner's if you leave network search to Auto. Will be staying at Ohope Beach early January. Any idea whether this new tower in Whakatane will cover Ohope Beach motor camp? Google Earth says 10km by road, but I'm guessing there could be some hills in the way? I understand Vodafone have just upgraded coverage in Ohope. Not sure what to expect from XT. I'm hoping for good data speeds then. If anyone has anything to add, I'd be grateful.

The Whakatane tower will almost certainly not cover Ohope due to the hills. Having said that, I see on the map that there's a new tower that looks like it's intended for Ohope but I can't say what the coverage is like or even whether it's active yet.

I suspect that Whakatane and Ohope are being treated as a single place in terms of expansion.

The other thing to consider is that Vodafone run's it's network and groups their cellsites into regions... So there is an agreement between 2D and Vodafone in regards to the "regions" that are open on the Vodafone network that 2D subscribers can roam to and which ones aren't.

So if 2D wants to have coverage in that total region, then need to build like for like across all of Vodafone's sites, since when they switch on the "Broadband / 2D Zone" Vodafone will lock them out from their network.

That (to my guesstimation) may be why 2D are building in areas that seem unlikely or low population rather than focusing on other areas with higher population since their customers would loose total coverage in that area once they switch to their own network rather than roaming.

But this is all pure speculation (apart from the known fact about how Vodafone split up their network, since that's been posted numerous times on here) on my part.
