So, I'm keen to swap in my mikrotik in place of the genius router. Has anyone done this specifically with a mikrotik?

Any Mikrotik gurus out there?

My rb433 wont do VLAN tagging on a switch, but can on bridged ports

I haven't yet tried connecting the Mikrotik onto the ONT. Will the mikrotik get dhcp from it? Although I've played a lot with the mikrotik over the past year or so, vlans isn't something i've had a chance to work with.

I used to have it running as a pptp server that my iphone could log into, except pptp passthrough is not possible on the genius due to it's "already pre configured to bridge mode"

The DHCP is actually to Orcons BNG device. If you are not vlan tagging on your WAN port, then the DHCP packets will never get to the BNG.

So short answer is. Your WAN needs to be tagged with VLAN 10, or else it won't work.

done

in a nutshell:

defaulted the mikrotik
added a static ip to port3 (this is lan-side) and created a password so i can configure it
setup the wireless card (country, frequency, password ...)
added a vlan interface with id 10, asigned to ether1 (wan side)
added dhcp client to the vlan interface which got an address immediately
created a 'home' bridge and added ether3 and the wireless card
added a local ip address and dhcp server to the home bridge
added firewall rule to nat masq

at which point it's done and working

took me a bit longer than usual as i was trying to make use of it's Quick Set option which broke a bunch of stuff and caused conficts elsewhere whereas i was hoping to tweak the settings it filled out.

Damn looks like they've locked down what can connect to the port on the Chorus box: I can no longer connect my PC or the Mikrotik to it, does work as above.

Nope, shouldn't be the case.

Aslong as you are using 802.1q with vlan 10 and DHCP on the WAN, it should work fine.

Helpdesk won't support anything other than genius however.

maybe it's a mac address limit or something, and you've stuck a switch in?

Can put a switch between the genius and the ont and it still logs in. I'll have to see if I can get the MAC address of the genius and clone it onto the mikrotik and/or my pc.

It's a shame as it's handy to take the genius out when diagnosing their crap performance. In spite of the latest truenet report, web browsing with orcon is less snappy than my old adsl with Vodafone. YouTube is a classic example, it has this weird behaviour of rapidly buffering several seconds of video but quickly drops off the buffering speed. Seeking the video makes the buffer go fast again for a few seconds. Also HD streams can often download quicker than sd.

If you are going to get a Mikrotik get something which can actually support the thruput on UFB.

I would suggest a RB2011L-IN or above. the 75x/95x if you want to do anything fancy just don't handle 100/50 UFB but a 30/10 any of them should work fine.

a RB951G-2HnD should be ok for 100/50 for a little less $$ but I've not tried it (its just quite new) . A RB751U/G is just a little slow to NAT + Firewall.

RB2011's are my favourite toy at present. An exceptionally cool device and the the SFP port is a big bonus.

Like sounddude said, there's no such limitation. You must tag all traffic as VLAN 10 using 802.1q - that's all (that, and we can't support anything other than Genius).

it used to work without having to use orcons genius router. now it does not. dhcp used to get supplied to the vlan interface on the mikrotik now it does not. nor does my pc connect in the same manner with vlan tagging enabled when it did before.

and it's a given that i shouldn't expect support for a third party device from such an isp. other's do and I certainly plan to shift at the end of the contract.
