I started on Orcon Unlimited last month, coming from Slingshot Unlimited. Definately a downgrade, peak congestion is much worse than Slingshot, and video streaming, even off-peak is pretty poor. I suspect this is because Slingshot has more extensive caching.

If I wasn't under contract, I think I would switch back to Slingshot even though it is $10 more and without unlimited national calling.

I have a stable connection with approx 16meg sync and a single jackpoint, so definately not a line issue in my case. Also based in Riccarton, Christchurch and yes I did experience last nights issues.

Also quite keen to see speed results on this plan.

Nick if you have time, could you please show some speed tests (Namely Auckland, Sydney & LA in the US) ?

Are you able to stream you tube @ 1080 without pause ?
What download speeds do you often see ?
What pings do you get to game servers in AU  ?   (If you play FPS games on AU servers)

Thanks in advance.

Just tried 'Call me maybe' 1080p, streamed fine, although it is most likely cached. Will give it a shot tonight but doubtful that it would work in peak time.

(remembering that my sync rate is ~16meg, and countless threads here about the inaccuracy of speedtests)

Auckland Speedtest ~13meg
Sydney speedtest ~12meg
LA speedtest ~6meg

Worth noting that the speeds vary a lot, for instance the time series graph on the speedtest bounces up and down during the test

I don't play FPS online, though if you give me an IP address i can do a ping test in peak time tonight for you

Being "speed" I supposed these numbers are megabits per second, not megabytes per second?

Sure, but i haven't seen it quite that pronounced on a speedtest with other ISPs. IIRC the TCP saw tooth effect has a longer period than the time for a typical speedtest

Correct. Given that we are talking about DSL, it could not be megabytes with those sorts of values

69.174.220.23  please.   (Planetside 2 AU server :) )

Also if you are able to post the pings that speedtest.net show to NZ/AU/US West servers that would be great too.

Cheers.

P.S.  This helps more than you know. Looking at moving into Riccarton side of Chch so cheers again.

Surprise - 1080p youtube streams fine right now, although it could be considered past peak time.

To your IP address above - 63ms ping

44ms to Auckland
61ms to Sydney
205ms to LA

I should note that these tests are over wifi, but the current transmit rate is over 100Mb with no other wireless clients so no congestion and running at 5Ghz so should have minimal interference. So shouldn't influence throughput, although may have a minute impact on latency

Ping to LA is a bit disappointing on Orcon. However most of my games are to AU, so should be no problem.

Thanks for the help.

Much appreciated.
