Hi all,

Flip has just launched this morning a No Cap Data Pack for $35 per month when you get a homeline for $49.95. So in total you're looking at $84.95.

This new pack is unmetered, rather than unlimited as there is a fair use policy - see below

Flip’s unmetered data pack (called ‘No Data Cap Pack’) heavily limits the speed of peer to peer (p2p) downloading at all times to protect overall network performance. This will include other web downloading where appropriate.

At Flip's sole discretion excessive users will be notified to reduce their use, then if no suitable change, removed from this pack.

All other fun stuff like streaming, browsing, gaming and internet calling runs at full speed.

So as you can see, this pack isn't about massive downloading/leeching. It's about heavy use of the internet in general of legal content. Good for flats, families and anyone that simply uses the internet a lot.

Here's some FAQ's

How will gaming perform? And will downloading of games from the likes of Steam be affected?

Gaming will work fine on this pack - it's been tested specifically.

Downloading of games from sites like Steam will be all good.

How heavily will you be restricting the listed technologies?

Depending on network load, it could drop to around 128k. Please note this not a guaranteed rate.

What about backup/sharing sites like Dropbox?

Dropbox and similar sites that don't overtly allow you share illegal movies etc will be fine.

I notice Skydrive is on the 'limited' list (a service similar to iCloud or Dropbox, offered by Microsoft). This has very tight integration with Windows 8 and Windows Phone (and can see frequent use on Windows 7/Mac when installed). Any idea why this is restricted?

I think here in New Zealand would be the only place in the world where this sort of thing would happen. This country is totally obsessed with Microsoft products.

I don't see any services like FileZilla or CuteFTP on the list. What about SSH & sftp? There are a lot of legitimately used tools being blocked here. I think I'll stick to my ISP and keep my unfiltered connection.

Don't want to get into the Megaupload debate sorry.

Mega.co.nz looks fine so far. No plans to restrict it.

This is simply not true.

Regarding others, I can see a few restrictions being placed on tools I generally use (such as SSH for transferring data back and forth between local dev and servers, and SOCKS for debugging). But I'm sure these things will be tweaked along the way, and as explained the No Cap plans are for general heavy use (eg large families/hoiseholds) and not specialised requirements such as ours.

We'll be acting on feedback we go, and yes not really aimed at advanced/specialised/business use.

Obviously if you can make what we're providing work for you, go for it.

We don't have contracts either, so little risk testing the waters.

We utilise the CallPlus LLU network in terms of hardware in exchanges.

But most importantly, we have our own core giving complete control over our service. Flip is unaffected by other ISPs on this network.

Still a couple of interesting ones in there - Office Live for example, I can't see many pirates paying Microsoft a monthly fee to pirate... Word documents?

Ditto for Skyfire, which is actually a web browser for use on iPhones and iPads to allow viewing Flash videos on legitimate sites like Youtube or DailyMotion.

I see Kazaa is on the list, despite being discontinued for close to ten years. Since Skype is technically and functionally very similar to Kazaa (being derived from the same codebase) has Skype been tested?

Scribd is used for sharing documents, mostly used from what I've seen for sharing court documents (transcripts, etc) and is frequently used by completely legitimate news sources (CNN, NZ Herald, etc).

Live Mesh Sync is actually part of Skydrive now, and can only be used to sync between your own computers - you can't use it to share with anyone.

If I see any more I'll let you know :)
