I recently moved into an apartment in the Auckland CBD and the tenant already in the apartment was with Orcon. The connection here is absolutely awful.

There is fibre running along the road (have checked fibre maps), and used to be an internet cafe about 4 buildings down that had excellent connection rates.

Do you think this might be a problem with the wiring in the apartment building or something the ISP could potentially fix?

Here is my speedtest result to the auckland server:

This is the result to an LA server:

These are my connection stats:

Does anyone know if this kind of line rate is typical for Auckland CBD?

Pretty much all of Auckland is classed by Chorus as 10Mbps Zone, So my guess is it is a wiring issue.

Are you able to post the line stats from the router?

If my calculations are right (Don't quote me) you are 2.5Km away from the exchange / cabinet and should be getting around 10Mb on a 35db Attenuation,

Have you got a master filter installed?

I'm in an apartment that only has one phone, which is our VOIP which goes through our Orcon BOB.

Doesn't eliminate the need for a master filter. I assume there is more than one jackpoint in the apartment? Do you have a patch panel in your apartment that will allow you to perform a full isolation test?

As far as I know there's only one jack, and it's a rented apartment so I don't know how I'd go about getting a master splitter installed.

Would it be worth going and buying a new regular filter in case that's the problem?

Since you have a naked connection a plug in filter isn't needed.

A master filter on the other hand is the only way to eliminate issues caused by multiple jackpoints.

Have you lodged a fault with your ISP? What did the SPM results come back showing?

So I don't really have any options then, I can't exactly go rewiring an apartment that I don't own.

First step is to lodge a fault with your ISP and get a line test run.

Ahh won't be SPM because you're probably on ULL rather than a Chorus connection.
