Ive just recently ported my phone number from Orcon to PlaNet/KCI and the other services on my account were closed as a result, no problems there.  I would have kept with Orcon and moved to UFB with them but it took them 3 months to get back to me and initially the responce I got was UFB not yet available in my area.  PlaNet/KCI confirmed infact it was and I was up and running within a few weeks.

I want to keep my Orcon email address as when I signed up many years ago (2004) I was told at the time I could keep my @Orcon email for life.  There are still domain mailboxes sitting on my account I cant delete even though there are no domains hosted, they have been transfered to Sitehost now.  I called Orcon and the cust rep at overseas call centre said I need to pay $2/month to keep my @orcon email address?  as its part of a domain mailbox?  I have several other child accounts and the rep said one of the child accounts was the free Orcon email address, not the email on the parent account.  The phone call to Orcon was basically pointless in my opinion as the rep doesnt seem to know what he's talking about.  Hence this post.  I need someone from Orcon to remove my child accounts and also domain mailboxes, my Orcon username is same as geekzone username and is my primary account with email I want to keep.

$2.00 per month seems a reasonable fee pay for the service and I doubt that Orcon would making a profit from it.

No what you are paying for is a Domain Mailbox which has 100MB of storage space.
You can tell them that you don't want the domain mailbox but a normal one which is free and the storage space is 50MB I think from memory. :)

(basically that $2 is for more storage space)

So depends if you have lots of emails or small email box.

$2 is nothing and yes you should pay a fee to keep it

Not sure if they still offer it, but at one stage they were giving away orcon emails addresses free for life, even if you weren't a customer.

Your tenancy at a house has ended. You need to tell all your billers that you have a change of address

In this case your ex landlord is offering to redirect your mail for $2 a month

Your choice to accept or to move to a free parking site like gmail or move to a new address with a new landlord that may or may not do the same when you end your next tenancy

I seem to remember a Orcon rep here a month or two ago when Telecom said they were going to charge saying that Orcon email addresses were for life and no charge..

They did say a while back you could get email addresses for free without being an Orcon customer, for life. Since you have an existing one, that might be different to go from a customer to non-customer, if they no longer do sign ups for the free email-for-life accounts?

Hi Gareth,

Flick me a PM with your account details and I'll sort it out.
Sounds like someone has their wires crossed ;) @orcon addresses are indeed free for life.

Cheers,
Lance.

Considering most providers charge a lot more- eg: $5 or $10 to retain a mailbox, that's a low rate.

Then again, $2 a month for a "domain" mailbox of 100MB is whether you are a customer or not, which suggests their standard free mailboxes are still 10MB, while my current ISP allows up to 5 mailboxes at 100MB each as long as you have an internet service with them.

I can understand them not allowing lifetime ownership of the email accounts. (EDIT: apparently they still do) Especially since as more and more customers pass through their network, more and more free email accounts will be owned, and the cost of maintaining them will only go up with no return (since many of those accounts will be owned by people who do not have any paid services with Orcon).

Domain mailboxes ($2/Month I think) are the same as Normal (Free) mailboxes but they allow other than @orcon.net.nz email addresses to be put into them. (For example if someone has a domain name with Orcon)

If you remove the domain from Orcon it will still be a domain mailbox (and charged at $2/Month)

It _should_ take someone @ Orcon about 5 seconds to change it into a normal mailbox and thus not get charged for it.
