Hi,

I'm posting this on behalf of a coworker who is looking at moving to Snap. He lives in Ohope (near Whakatane) and is currently with Xnet. At the time of joining Xnet, they didn't have the necessary setup here so his Xnet phone number is from Tauranga. He can call other people in Tauranga for free, but "local" calls to Ohope and Whakatane are charged at the national rate. For this reason he's also paying for a Telecom landline so that he can call locally for free.

He just called Snap's helpdesk and apparently succeeded in hopelessly confusing the person at the other end. They initially said that local calling would be exactly the same as on Xnet, but then said that it's the same as Telecom and that calling his neighbours would be free. There's no explanation that either of us could find on the Snap site around what constitutes a local call, so how do you know for sure?

His other question is around whether he can take his existing Telecom phone number across to Snap. Is that doable?

Local means you don't need to dial any prefix. If you have to dial a prefix (even if it's the same as your own) then it's not a local call. If you don't, and just dial 7 digits, then it's local.

Assuming that Snap! have a presence in your calling area (known as LICAs) then you will be able to port your number in - if it's in the same calling area (LICA).

Just curious.

He must be making an absolute shed load of 'local' calls to justify spending circa $50 on a Telecom line for that purpose only.

XNet only charge 5cpm for national calls and besides which offer a $20 add-on which gives you 1000 minutes (effecitvely 2c per minute).

So even without buying the add-on and just paying the standard per minute rate, he would need to be making over 1000 minutes (over 16 hours!) per month for the Telecom landline to be cost efficient, and with the add-ons he could make many many more.

I have no idea how many calls he's making, just that he's paying $80-$90 all up for both of his phone lines (not counting broadband). It looks like switching to Snap will make the cost plummet :)

Thanks ubergeeknz, I've told him that anything without an area code (which would be Ohope, Whakatane, Kawerau, and everything in between) is free and he's happy with that.

Thanks ubergeeknz, I've told him that anything without an area code (which would be Ohope, Whakatane, Kawerau, and everything in between) is free and he's happy with that.

Just get the $70 naked broadband from Snap then get the number ported from Telecom which we know is the right local number and get the $11 plan from 2Talk which has local calling and 250 mins national or some overseas included.

Xnet do Whakatane calling area now, so that could solve the issue too

Hey Behodar,

Local numbers are assigned per local calling region (or LICA) which is defined by the TCF number administration, and the definition of a free local call is if “party-a” calls “party-b” and they are in the same LICA area then it’s a free call.

We can however port your friends Telecom number to our Snap Plus service and he would retain the same local calling area. Or we can give him a new number in the correct local calling region.

With regards to tolls etc, we do have our $10 per month "Unlimited National Calling" package that could save him a heap of money!

Not really.

What would be dodgy and stretching the rules would be using a phone inside one LICA and setting your CID so that it looked like it was originating from inside another LICA.
