I'm a recent and unwilling subject of a breakin, which included a smartphone. I didn't realise until now that Telecom and Vodafone have an arrangement where if a customer calls in and says "please block my phone from your networks, with IMEI # x", that the phone is now useless to anybody that wants to use that phone. Excellent. That blocks things on Telecom and Vodafone.

As many of you no doubt know, 2 degrees does not honour this system. Reps I spoke to at Vodafone and Telecom were quick to point this out. "Sort of makes the whole system pointless," joked a store rep. "If you see a phone on trademe that says 2 degrees only - that's a stolen phone"

Best case, block the phones from your network. If you're too cheap or busy to do that, why don't you at least inform the customers that they are using a stolen phone? I can get a URL for you if you're too busy to find that.

So, 2 degrees, I'm really disappointed in you. I hope you at least manage to slip in some extra fees on the thief's bill on my behalf.

I know 2Degrees is getting a EIR in place

Edit: 2D have confirmed EIR in place now and they can Blacklist IMEI numbers

We DO have IMEI blocking on our network.

Please can you PM me your number and phone make/model and include your DOB and address that's on your details for authentication.

do you share information with VF and Telecom (and vice versa) like they do with each other to block phones stolen being used on a different network?

I can confirm Vodafone NZ and Telecom NZ do share EIR data, It will be great news when it's shared between all 3 carriers

Interesting, not what your reps are telling the TCF, clearly. Can you confirm the most recently reported (to Telecom) handset you have blacklisted in your EIR?

That's not what I'm asking for. I want to know when you last updated Telecom (or loaded an update from Telecom) as part of this list sharing process. Any time in the last 12 months?

updates happen once a week or once every 2 weeks

The issue has been raised numerous times here in the past couple of years with people buying handsets marked as 2degrees only on Trademe and finding they won't work on Vodafone or Telecom.

The bigger issue 2degrees are going to face is how they deal with the bigger issue once they do shart sharing data - the stolen phones on their network now that will be be turned into bricks overnight.

Is it possible to have the IMEI flagged (but not blocked) so that if it pops up on the network the police can use call record to find the new 'owner'?

I dont feel that it will be 2D problem at all - you run a risk when purchasing any 2nd hand item that its been stolen, and theres no guarantee the police/owner wont come knocking for it to be returned or in telco land, the device is rendered useless.

True, plus once they get the data from the other operators I'm sure they can check what is active on thier network before blacklisting everything - and issue some kind of warning. It would make sense to avoid all the calls from grumpy customers.
