In Orcons literature the difference between the Genius Lite and Genius products is the phone hanset and therefore I have always assumed the Lite product could 'host' DECT handsets but did not come with one.  However A bit of research here indicates that this is not the case - the Lite product can only 'host' wired phones.

I currently am on an Orcon VOIP plan with DECT phones registered to a base that is connected to the RJ11 jack on the Lite router.  To eliminate the base it would seem that I need the full Genius product - but I thought I would check here first.

To pair a DECT phone directly to the Genius without another base unit etc, the phone needs to be "GAP" compliant IIRC.

NZ seems to be very limited on such phones however. If you search on GZ, there is a discussion about it when Genius first came out.

I just plug my DECT phone base into the RJ11 on the Genius and have the Genius handset elsewhere in the house.

My understanding is that the Lite Genius does not contain any DECT tech. You need the full Genius to use DECT.

Then again Ive heard it only works with certain DECT handsets. Our Panasonic ones for example would not register.

Correct, however some Full devices are sold as Lites.

You can check by the firmware version.. if it's GeniusLitexxxx then it's a Lite with no DECT chipset, if it's Geniusxxxx then it's a Full (but with no handset).

Another easy way to tell is look on the side opposite the power and LAN ports, Full has a USB port for the handset, Lite doesn't.

Thanks to all - its definitely a Lite - firmware Version is GeniusLite1300.  I guess I will have to 'upgrade'

One thing to note - From testing Only Genius Handsets will pair with Genius Hardware 'natively' -- eg; your Uniden/Panasonic/Oricom DECT handset won't pair up -- You can however plug in the DECT baseunit to the RJ11 FXS port on the side of the Unit and pair Multiple Handsets to that, if it supports it.

'Upgrading' to the Genius Full will only give you the ability to have the Genius DECT handset paired directly to the modem, not other brand units.

Orcon lists the Genius product as 'Gap Compatible' (https://www.orcon.net.nz/support/gfaq_page/orcon_genius_tech_specs under DECT) and my handset lists itself as 'Gap Compatible' here (https://support.panasonic.co.nz/docstore/KXTCD440_TCD445%20book.pdf - see page 36 under 'Standard').  While the listed frequency ranges of the 2 devices are slightly different they do overlap.

I would be interested if anyone with more subject knowledge than me could comment further.

I've paired our Panasonic handsets to our lite no problem, model kx-tg7301. Cheap phone.

You can also use handset extensions - handset and charger units designed as extensions to your existing base.

I would not bother with using the Genius as the base station. I have several Panasonic DECT handsets which all paired ok but I lost the use of a number of features like clock display and some CLI/phone book functions. I have since ditched the Genius handset and changed all handsets back to the Panasonic base station and plugged it back into the RJ11 port.
In my opinion you are best to stick with what you have as it will not get any better pairing with the Genius.

Hmmm my Genius Lite has....

Firmware : Genius1423
and a port that says  - Handset charger, does this mean its the full one just minus the handset?

Is there a compatible handset i can plugin the the handset charger.

Pity actually i think all my cordless phones are non dect

You are correct - it's not a Lite, just a Full sans handset.  If you plan to use the DECT features, beware that if it goes faulty and we send a replacement, it may be an actual Lite (with no DECT capability).
