I have been offline for 8 days trying to connect to Snap VDSL.

Was supposed to be connected last tuesday , but, the VDSL modem would cycle between "VDSL Training" and "Line fault" .  In other words , I could not get VDSL Sync.

Called Snap on Tuesday, they scheduled a chorus technician.

Chorus came out on Thursday morning, and said the port was dead and he swapped me to a new one.  (Question, if the port was 'dead' then why did it say 'VDSL Training..." .

Chorus tried their VDSL modem on my line, works perfectly OK.

I install Snaps fritzbox modem, and I get the same "Line fault" failure.

Called Snap again, and asked them to send me a new modem.

They refused, and told me I had to return my fritzbox so snap could test it, then return it to me.

I'm pretty annoyed about this as it means more delays but I have no choice so I return the modem.

On Friday, Snap call me and say the modem works perfectly on their line, and they changed some stabililty settings and say they will return the 'faulty' modem to me.   I ask them to send it Saturday delivery and they promise to do this.

Another thing annoyed me here, Snap said they changed the modems vdsl stability settings and would return the same modem.  So, why didn't they get me to do that on Thursday?  We could have eliminated that as the cause of the problem without all of this posting of the modem around the country.

So on Saturday, waiting at home for the modem to turn up.   Never arrives.

On Monday, call the courier company, they say it was not sent with Sat Delivery as promised. Not Happy.

The modem turns up on Monday afternoon.

Plug it in.....modem still faulty as I expected.

Call snap again, this time, they FINALLY agree to send me a new modem.

Today, the new modem arrives  .... working .....  woohoo.   But, what a nightmare, my phone/internet has been out for 8 days and there are some very grumpy people in the house now.

So, why didn't snap get me to test the stability settings on thursday, so they could have jsut sent me a new one immediately?  We knew my vdsl line was OK because it was syncing with other vdsl modems OK.

At least I am finally connected!!

How is your wiring? Do you have a master filter installed or have the VDSL2 jack on it's own dedicated line?

If not you need to sort your premises wiring out first.

sbiddle: How is your wiring?

My wiring is fine (new-ish house), with master vdsl filter installed, only one phone jackpoint (inside distribution cabinet). With house alarm, which is the reason for installing the master filter.

Now I have a working fritz box , my modem stats are....

Max. DSLAM throughput kbit/s 70000 10360
Min. DSLAM throughput kbit/s 360 360
Current throughput kbit/s 47576 10360
Latency 1 ms 1 ms
Signal-to-noise ratio dB 11 16
Line attenuation dB 3 -
So, I'm very happy now, just the process was frustrating as I could have been online last week.

Well, the guy I spoke with on Thursday said this is the first time he experienced both a faulty modem and faulty telecom port.   But I don't understand why they couldn't have just sent me a new modem on Thursday last week.

Essentially it came down to snap not wanting to open a new modem and that they didn't have any test modems in stock.   I suggested they open a new modem and slap a test sticker onto it as obviously they do not have enough -- but, they didn't want to do that. Fritzboxes wholesale cost must be at least $200 I guess.

Anyway, 8 days without internet/phone. 3 days were because of Chorus, the rest was because of Snap.

But, now I am online the connection quality is excellent and I expect there will be few problems in future.
