Hi guys

I own a 2Degrees Samsung GS3 that is running CM10.1. All has been perfect until a few weeks ago when I updated CM10.1 and my wifi started having issues.

I have preformed all the usual to try and fix the issue - factory reset, installing other roms including Samsung stock, searching the interwebs for fixes, and nothing has helped.

My issue is exactly the same as a bunch of users in the thread below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779535

After preforming a battery of tests, I have found the following:

1. When connecting to ANY 2.4GHz wifi router within 1m, the router reports my RSSI as around -80. (My Macbook Pro at the same range is around -40)

2. When my router reports an RSSI of -80, my phone actually reports -40's. (Using Stock rom and *#0011# code etc)

3. Due to the signal levels my routers are reporting, my connection speeds @ 1m is max 5Mbps

4. As I move away from the Wifi router my phone loses connectivity. When it tries to reconnect, it displays 'authentication error'. I am assuming this is because the signal level is less than -90.

SO, what I am asking you all is two things:

Has anyone had this issue and successfully fixed it?

And, being that my phone has been rooted and is running a custom rom, does anyone have any experience with this and warranty returns? (I have decided that my Wifi chip/antenna is broken -and no it hasn't been mistreated!).

Anyone's comments would be appreciated.

No, but what you describe is exactly what my SGS2 does on the 5GHz channels, and I was told that it was the wifi power amp being cooked. I didnt bother doing anything about it when it was under warranty since I thought it might have been compatibility issues with my ancient 802.11A gear.

As Dragonx says try different firmware first to see if it is that or hardware. If it is hardware you need to reset flash counters with Triangle away from the play store (sorry cant remember if S2 actually has these, S3 does) and unroot for a warranty. Plenty of info on how to do it on XDA.

Thanks guys for your input. As it turns out I think I have fried my TX on the 2.4Ghz chip - and my 5GHz chip works perfectly.

It is now running stock 2 Degrees firmware with official bootloader and is going back to my business account manager on Thursday for shipping to the Samsung service centre under warranty.

Also thanks kiwitrc, that triangle app worked like a treat!

Cheers

Just check first under settings, about device, status, scroll to bottom and make sure device status isnt showing modified.

Also boot into download mode (vol down, home button and power)  and check what it says in tiny print at the top. Make sure it is not showing modified etc there

Do you reckon it was the other firmware that caused the problem, or just a coincidence? I've been thinking about custom ROMs...
