Hi there, for around six months now i have been receiving repeat texts on my mobile - the same text will  come through 5 times.  i was wondering if its a problem with the handset or with the network.  Does anyone else have this problem?

The only way you will know if it's a issue with the handset is to try the same SIM in another handset and see if the repeat SMS stop, Sounds like a handset issue

Thanks for that, had always just assumed it would be the networks problem as the phone wasn't that old.  I appreciate your advice Smile

What handset do you have and what location are you in?

Come see me, I run the Napier 2degrees store. We will do some fault finding for you and sort it out.

To be honest we very rarely see people with text issues (i know people on here are complaining about them) in store, and 90% of the time its a handset issue. If I had to put a number on it maybe 1 person a month comes in with an issue about texting. Maybe people just dont think to come into store when they have issues texting? maybe not that many people actually have text issues on 2degrees? I dont know...

The number one complaint I had was unreliable texts, 3 of my mates have switched to telecom because if their unreliable texts. With many others complaining too. I had a htc one x when I was a 2degrees customer.

My Xperia Ray on Vodafone does that too when it hasn't had a reboot for a while and when the whole system is laggy. Will receive the same message again and again up to 5 times. It's like the phone doesn't send confirmation to the network that it successfully received the message in the correct amount of time so the network keeps re-sending thinking you never go the text in the first place. I have no idea if that's how SMS on mobile networks work but after a reboot and a snappy and responsive system, texts come in once and once only. So I'd start looking at the handset before the network.

There's a number of reasons this may be happening, you phone may not be connecting to the SMSC properly, check your Service Centre # is +64220227672.
There may also be an app or corrupt text causing blocking and when the block clears resending as the phone hasn't responded in time to let it know it's received it.

Try clearing your data from the messaging app as this can sometimes affect SMS -
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications >  All (at the top of the screen) > scroll down to Messaging > and press 'Clear data'.

This will not delete your messages.

First of all though as mentioned above (thanks guys) try the SIM in another phone and see if it's still happening. We can look into this if you PM your #, phone make/model or call 200.

Cheers

I've been a 2 degrees customer for just over a year and a half, and have always had a problem with duplicated texts coming through. It uses to only be from Vodafone numbers but in the last few weeks it seems to happen to any number.

One example I get text alerts with my bank account whenever a deposit is made, today I got the same message 7 times.

Just got the same message 3 more times :S
Don't think it's the sender who is sending the same message 10 times now.

I received a message three times a couple of weeks ago. When my friend arrived at the pub he commented that he'd sent it three times because each time he sent it he got some sort of error message on his handset.

The solution was to politely ask him not to contact me via SMS. Regardless of the cause of the problem in this particular case I've had such high failure rates with SMS that it's not worth persevering with - there are plenty of other ways for people to contact me these days.
