Hi,

My friend on 2degrees just bought a Samsung Galaxy Pocket. She tried to send me a photo (I am on Vodafone). I got a text directing me to the pxtworld.co.nz to view the photo. Is this normal? Why can she not send me photos directly? Does she have to have MMS enabled on her account or something to do so?

The phone was bought from a 2 Degrees stand at the warehouse and of course contains a 2D sim. So I assume the APN's are set correctly... I don't have the handset so I can't check them.

Is your phone new?
All VF users need to send a MMS from a new handset to activate the service first, then subsequent MMS will be delivered directly to the handset

Yep, this.

OP, you should probably just send it to yourself so you can see it arrive on the handset.

I have sent and received photos before but it may be that she had to send one to activate her end because it seems to be working now.

Nothing that happens on the 2degrees end will determine whether you receive your texts via pxtworld or to the handset. Either you used a non MMS configured handset some time, or there was a hiccup with the system at VF.

If you ever have a SIM swap or number swap done you need to send a PXT first before a incoming PXT will be delivered to your handset

At the time I was installing Vodafone's MMS system in 2002, there were very few handsets that supported it. Therefore it made sense to design the system in such a way as to be absolutely sure you had an MMS-capable handset before sending MMSes to you. The best way to do that was to have you first send an MMS.

PXTWorld was built to cope with all the people who could not receive MMS, but still might be sent one.

By the time I got to 2degrees in 2008 and installed the system there I was able to make the argument that there were not enough handsets left that couldn't receive an MMS (not to mention that PXTWorld was never exactly overloaded with users) to make it worthwhile doing all that work and having to carry it as an ongoing expense that would never pay its own way. Therefore in our network we just assume your handset is MMS-capable and if it's not, and that really bothers you, then we can deal with that manually. I don't think either of the two people left in NZ for whom those are both true are 2degrees customers.

Arguably if PXTWorld disappeared tomorrow nobody would even notice, but in a big organisation like Vodafone it's very, *very* hard to make a call like that, because it's always somebody's baby, and there's always that one customer who has their whole life invested in it and will tell Fair Go if you take it away.

TL;DR yes, Vodafone's network *does* know which phones can receive MMS automatically. They do it by having your handset send an MMS.
