Hi,

I was just wondering if it was possible to turn off responding to ping requests on the WAN interface of the Orcon Genius router? I could in my old router but cannot find it by looking through the web interface or in the manual.

Yes it can be done.

Login to router

Advanced Settings

Firewall

Intrusion Detection Table > Configure

Tick "Discard PING to WAN Interface"

Save Setting and Continue

On the next screen click "Cancel" (unless you want to configure email alerts).

Dunno - but I am vaguely suspicious of why my ip address is being pinged. Even though my ip address is not fixed I don't want to authenticate it by responding to a ping?

Why is someone pinging my ip address?

people just search for addresses by pinging to see if anything is connected. I don't see any harm in responding as long as the rest of your firewall is working well.

Understood. When (infrequently) anything goes wrong with 'the internet' I post here first even if I have to cart the laptop to a free Wi-Fi network to do so.

Thanks ubergeeknz, it did the trick. Is there a more detailed manual for the router (I could not find anything on the Orcon website).

Didn't realise my question would cause such a big discussion...

As for why anyone would want to turn this feature off, I would turn the question on its head and ask why anyone (standard home user) would want it on all the time? Since I have had broadband I have never had the need to ping my router on the WAN interface.

I agree with OldGeek, if you don't use it than turn it off (e.g.file and print sharing, wifi, UPnP, etc).

Replying to ICMP Echo packets isn't necessarily a bad thing. Very useful for debug purposes for both yourself and helpdesk/technial staff.

I wouldn't be too concerned leaving it turned on.

but no harm turning it off either. We left it on as default on the genius modem.

Just make sure the firewall is enabled on the genius modem! Very important!
