Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone might have suggestions as to the reasons behind some massive data usage on my Orcon account.

Last month I started seeing my monthly data limit being used almost daily (normal use is around 3gb per month - this was about 2gb per day). We have had no change in devices, usage habits or people in the household.I've got passwords on the modem, router and internet connection, and full malware / virus scanner. I also have a wireless MAC filter enabled to only allow our two computers and two phones to connect to oour network after experiencing something similar a couple of years ago.

I was told by the tech helpline to try changing the passwords, which I did. Their other suggestion was to turn off the router every time I stop using the internet.
I thought it could be something dodgy on our devices, but at one stage my partner and I both left town for a couple of days (with our phones), and both computers were at home turned off. When I got home I checked the usage and it was still over 2gb for both those days when nobody was home. From this I can't understand how it can be anything we've done.

After a few more days of turning the modem and router on and off each time we wanted to use the internet I kept it off for over 24 hours on the further suggestion of one of the tech guys. When I turned it on the problem seemed to have been fixed.

I was first told the excess data charges were valid as my connection wasn’t secured, but when I told them it was secured, they called me back and said they are valid because my connection WAS secured! I've since been told again the charges are valid because my connection wasn't secured. I'm not sure which one is correct!!

I'm so confused and am just trying to figure out what could have caused the issues in the first place. Has anyone here experienced something like this or know what it might be?

Any help would be much appreciated!! (I'm not very tech savvy so please be gentle!)

Thanks :-)

What modem/router model are you using? Is the firewall turned on?

Hi,

The modem is NetComm NB14 (provided by Orcon).
Router is TP-Link TL-WR740N.

The windows firewall was turned off as the antivirus programme kept prompting me to turn it off so it could work properly.

Thanks

I think Mauricio means the router's firewall.. Have you checked that?

Would that be "SPI Firewall" under "Basic Security" on the router page? If so yes it is turned on.

It seems in the last few weeks there's a lot of Netcomm modems that are responding to DNS requests coming from the WAN side (not your LAN), making it an easy tool for people doing DDoS attacks using DNS amplification.

Use this page with your IP address to see if this is the case.

It came up with this message:
Success! We detected your IP address as 60.234.140.4 and did not find an open DNS resolver running.

If that was the problem previously (it has gone back to normal usage over the past couple of weeks) would that have been something that was our fault for any reason? I've been trying (so far unsuccessfully) to get these extra charges waived but it's been hard when I couldn't figure out what was wrong and the only "technical" help the Orcon tech team gave me was to change my passwords more frequently and to turn off my router when I'm not using it.

I wish I found this forum earlier. Thanks for your help so far!!

Any games self updating? Is the WiFi password protected? Have you changed the password recently?

No games updating but there'd be a few apps on our phones that auto update. It doesn't seem to happen that often though as I think we get notifications every time anything updates.

Yes the wifi is password protected, and that password was last changed a few months ago. Nobody has been given that password since then either. Too much hassle having to load visitors devices on the wireless MAC filter so we don't bother!!
