Hi all,
I'm just wondering if anyone might have suggestions as to the reasons behind some massive data usage on my Orcon account.
Last month I started seeing my monthly data limit being used almost daily (normal use is around 3gb per month - this was about 2gb per day). We have had no change in devices, usage habits or people in the household.I've got passwords on the modem, router and internet connection, and full malware / virus scanner. I also have a wireless MAC filter enabled to only allow our two computers and two phones to connect to oour network after experiencing something similar a couple of years ago.
I was told by the tech helpline to try changing the passwords, which I did. Their other suggestion was to turn off the router every time I stop using the internet.
I thought it could be something dodgy on our devices, but at one stage my partner and I both left town for a couple of days (with our phones), and both computers were at home turned off. When I got home I checked the usage and it was still over 2gb for both those days when nobody was home. From this I can't understand how it can be anything we've done.
After a few more days of turning the modem and router on and off each time we wanted to use the internet I kept it off for over 24 hours on the further suggestion of one of the tech guys. When I turned it on the problem seemed to have been fixed.
I was first told the excess data charges were valid as my connection wasn’t secured, but when I told them it was secured, they called me back and said they are valid because my connection WAS secured! I've since been told again the charges are valid because my connection wasn't secured. I'm not sure which one is correct!!
I'm so confused and am just trying to figure out what could have caused the issues in the first place. Has anyone here experienced something like this or know what it might be?
Any help would be much appreciated!! (I'm not very tech savvy so please be gentle!)
Thanks :-)
