Three in the UK have just announced a simple 321 pay as you go plan which means;

3p/min
2p/text
1p/MB

This would be ideal for a pre pay user like me who doesn't need unlimited texts, a fixed number of minutes, or a certain amount of data for a fixed price.
I am on a $19 plan with 2degrees only because the auto top-up and $6 data set up I had before was a nightmare (data expired and I had $3 balance so $6 data didn't auto renew due to lack of funds and balance didn't auto top-up because it was above $2, etc.). I can never remember how much it costs to ring a Vodafone mobile, whether it's included in the plan, how many minutes I have left, blah blah blah....

Here's what 2degrees should do (or Vodafone or Telecom if they are savvy)

The 10-20-30 plan;

10c/text
20c/minute
30c/MB

That's it, simple, we all know how much stuff costs at all times. Whoever I text it's 10c (whatever network worldwide), whatever number I ring it's 20c (landline, mobile, answer phone), whatever data I use (2degrees or national) it's 30c for 1MB. This combined with auto-topup when below $2.

I know they currently have prepay on 9c/text, 44c/minute, 50c/MB but 9-44-50 hardly rolls off the tongue. In an ideal world NZ prices would be the same as the rest of the world, a 2-4-6 plan would be great but we all appreciate the world doesn't work like that.

Skinny isn't far off that with it's standard rates

8c/txt
39c/min
39c/MB

With the added bonus that you can buy value packs if you are a heavy texter, talker, or data user.

Guardian article here. It's called the 321 plan.

We believe Pay As You Go should offer simplicity
and value. That’s why we’re offering mind-blowing rates of
3p a minute, 2p a text and 1p a MB of data.

But if they make pre pay actually affordable then people won't be wasting money on plans they don't fully use.

I'd like to see a sensible calling plan: $10 a month for (n) minutes. All the calling plans everyone has are at least $20 a month. But what would be really ideal for me would be a $10 a month plan with 250-300txts and some minutes thrown in, I don't need unlimited txts I'm unlikely to ever go over 250 a month. Being able to afford a few 1-2 minutes calls a month would be nice though.

I couldn't care less about data, I like my phones cheap and dispensable.

Telecom Prepaid have $3 add ons.

$3 for 15 minutes of calls
$3 for 50 SMS
$3 for 30MB of data.

Can pick and choose what you want or don't want.

Those are certainly better lower end call price packs than 2Degrees offers. 100 minutes to nz for $30, meanwhile 100 minutes to India for $10. And nothing cheaper. Really guys?
$3 for 15min calling a month would be great for me, for times when txting just won't do. But: $3 for 50 sms, not enough. $12 for 5000 sms, way too many and more than I want to pay*. 2Degrees and Telecom both have $19 combo packs, if they halved their offerings for a $10 a month package that would be great.

*Give me 2500 (or heck, 500) for $6 & the 15min for $3 and I'd switch tomorrow.
[edit] Wait no I wouldn't, my phone is only 2G.

It's 200 minutes to NZ and Australia for $19, actually, and they last for 12 months.

They say that that's a special for now and that 100 minutes to nz for $30 is the norm.

I'm not talking about Everyone100. Everyone100 can now only be purchased on the old prepay plan. I'm talking about Chat200, which is permanent.

They only last for 12 months if you keep a carry over pack active continuously.

Of course you can always switch to the $6 pack and let your carry over balance run down and then switch back to $19 when you need a boost :)

Unless you use all of your prepaid minutes every month this 10 minutes won't make any real difference and any small benefit will be easily cancelled out by being to carry over unused minutes.
