I've been quite happy with my current plan, but I'm up for renewal in September and Telecom are offering VDSL in my area.

So Orcon will you be able to offer me VDSL by September, or after 10 years is it time to change ISP?

They are looking into it - Im not due for fibre for another 2 years minimum, so looking at VDSL solutions... Telecom only provider with package that interests me so far, but will hang out a bit longer to see what Orcon offers :)

I'm also hoping Orcon announce a VDSL plan soon, like this week. The Telecom offer looks really tempting and I don't think I want to wait much longer.

Response from Orcon yesterday....

@Orcon: @DemiseNZ @DylanReeve It's on our radar - but we have a few things to nail down first. (I want it too) ^QR

Actually - it was cabinetisation that killed that one.

But, yes, we do plan to launch VDSL. It requires a bit of work to be done here before we do however.

Geekzoners will be the first to know when we have a launch date :)

Yea, the CEO of the day was doing a radio interview about it pre unbundling, saying they are skipping ADSL and going straight to VDSL.

Could it be the sourcing of a suitable modem/router setup that is causing delays?

Orcon's current Genius unit supports both ADSL & UFB (via LAN port), and comes from iiNet in Australia. iiNet doesn't offer VDSL afaik. So Orcon would have to develop/procure this on their own. They could supply a separate VDSL modem, to plug into the LAN port of the Genius, but supporting this would be a nightmare

I went for Snap.
Orcon does not support Faxability or allow customers to have 2 numbers on their VOIP system.
The Fritzbox modem also make the "genius" modem look like a toy.

I dont have faxability (dont know anyone who does tbh), and the Genius can (in theory) deal with two lines, but it isnt available for some reason, but for a standard home user, 2 lines is a rarity. With Go available, it essentially gives you a 2nd line anyway :)

Ive looked at Snap but the pricing is the killer for me.

What % of consumers still require fax?
What % of consumers require more then one number on their home line?

A toy?? as compared to the vdsl modem SNAP support..

no resemblance to a space craft at all...
