Hi Folks,

Just noticed that my iPad, which shares data from my iPhone, is not accessing the internet over here in Brisbane. The iPhone is working just fine on both Telstra and Optus. Roaming is turned on and the APN is set to 'internet' for both data and tethering.

I thought perhaps that tethering might work, but Telstra apparently won't allow me to tether my iPad to my iPhone. Optus unceremoniously dumps me completely off the network when I attemot to tether, only allowing me to make SOS calls.

Is this how overseas roaming on shared data is supposed to work?

PS: Please don't post the obvious solutions of buying a local SIM or using Wifi. I'm not trying to solve a problem, just trying to find out how 2degrees shared data roaming works.

If a handset is going to SOS calls I would say this is not related to tethering,

If you are roaming what data bundle are you sharing? Roaming data is charged different when you leave your home network

Sharing does not work while international roaming. The idea behind sharing is that you can set it up and forget about it. It would be a real shame to forget about it at $10/MB, therefore we make it not work while international roaming. You'll need to top up the iPad's account or use some sort of Wifi.

It reverted back to allowing me to make calls immediately upon turning tethering off.

Thanks for the tip on using wifi :)

The iPad doesn't have an "account". I'm using shared data.

Roaming is 50 cents per MB. I'm in Brisbane.

I'm on account, not prepay. It can't be "topped up". So apparently I'm out of luck with roaming with my iPad at 50 cents per MB.

Do you connect your iPad to your iPhone using Personal Hotspot?

Yes, you are correct. I am talking about two different things, as per my original post. I tried data sharing, then tethering when it became apparent data sharing was not allowed.

Hi David, I think your set-up may be similar to mine. So you have a 2Degrees Pay Monthly plan on your iPhone, and a SIM in your iPad which has no plan or credit as such, but is used exclusively to share data with the plan on your iPhone?

If I have this right, then what Salty is telling you is correct. Not surprising really since he built the system.

If you put a SIM for shared data into your iPad, then it is a 2Degrees Prepay SIM. It has its own phone number and can be topped up separately if needed. I presume you know what its number is, since you would have had to initiate the shared data process to begin with.

Here in NZ, it's generally not necessary to top it up, but topping it up with a bit of credit when you're roaming is the way to get data.

If it were me I'd take out that SIM and put a local one in there on a data bundle from a local carrier, but those are your choices.

With new initiatives making customers feel like NZ and Australia are one big happy market, it might be time for them to think about whether blocking shared data when in Australia makes sense anymore.

Thanks jmosen, you were the only person to answer my original posting in a helpful and comprehensive way.

I won't take up any of the proposed solutions as this would be overkill for a short, sharp business trip to Brisbane. On longer trips I usually buy a local SIM, use wifi, use my Estonian mobile SIM though TravelSIM, etc. In this case I am hoping that 2degrees will rise to the occasion and offer shared data internationally as a opt-in feature., particularly in the 50 cents per MB countries. Not a huge problem as I'm more curious about how things work than desparate to solve a problem. I had no idea that the shared data SIM on my iPad that is linked to my on-account iPhone data could be topped up. Nice to know, but I probably won't use that particular solution due to the extra cost.
