Hi There

I signed up with Snap about four months ago and I am very happy with the performance of my connection and service I have received. I live in Tauranga and we had fibre laid down in our neighbourhood about 2 months ago with it is scheduled to be available on 1 August 2013 according to the Ultra Fast Fibre (UFF - the BOP\Waikato fibre company) website. At the moment I can only get "crappy" ADSL in my neighbourhood and I am not the closest to the exchange (6 Mbps). When I signed up with Snap I am certain I saw Snap listed as a retail provider on the UFF website, however now that the time is near for me being able to sign up to fibre, I do not see Snap as a provider on the UFF web site. I also do not see Snap down as a retailer in any of the UFF areas. I also did a quick address check on the snap website for my friends address who has had fibre available for 9 months which came up as not having fibre available at that address.

Question - will snap be offering fibre to any of the UFF areas? If so, is it available now, or will it be available in the future (and when)? My modem is causing me all sorts of issues and I was holding off on replacing it as I was anticipating getting fibre very shortly, however if it is a while away then I may as well get a new modem now.

I'm not going to change providers as I would rather stay on ADSL with Snap and get 6Mbps than go back to my old provider who gave me 0.4 Mbps to non-nz sites during hours whenever I was at home.

Have you considered local options?

We operate in/from Tauranga and we're more business orientated (we don't have plans to offer more than one residential option in the medium term).

Consequently speed & consistency are more important to us than maybe the residential options out there.

PS: Our record turn-around time on an install so far is two days :)

Snap has been promising to provide UFB to Tauranga, but, are reluctant to actually provide a date.

I guess Tauranga is just too insignificant for the major ISP's to bother with (excepting Orcon who are not even worth considering as they cannot even give dialup speeds sometimes).

Tauranga has more than enough ISPs at present:

Local options:

- Us
- Kinect
- Netsmart
- EOL

One consequence of the LFC model is that LFC's and Chorus are unable to provide L2 and L3 services. This means that tail services that exist with xDSL are not a product that exists in the UFB world.

In the real world this means an ISP has to provision their own backhaul into an area they wish to provide services. This will mean there will be ISP's who choose not to provide services in all areas and is already meaning there are areas such as Tauranga where multiple local ISP's are providing services and gaining a great head start over bigger nationwide providers.

Cheers for the great feedback on our ADSL service.

We are getting close to announcing our UFF launch details, we've got some trial customers on-line in Hamilton at the moment and all of them are more than happy with the performance of the service (if you haven't already check out the Truenet results and you'll see why!!).

Without giving everything away it is looking very likely that Tauranga will be included in our UFF launch announcement. We're just a bit reluctant to commit to a firm date as we tend to get crucified if we're more than a day out!

We're also proud to say we offer a full range of residential and business broadband services - unlike others who say they're business focused and then constantly trawl these forums looking for residential customers ;) Our residential customers also really appreciate the fact that our contact centre is open 24/7 - not many of our competitors can say that.

I like the fact that there can be more regional ISPs by virtue of the model who can focus on their area. Still its a bit frustrating if a business has multiple branches and the same ISP isn't available for each.

The UFB model with backhaul should result in greater consistency of service.

With copper, most ISPs pay a small fee per connection to get your traffic back to a central hand over point (HOP). As an example, our xDSL HOP is in Auckland so we pay a little more to get traffic from Invercargill back Auckland, than we would for someone in Auckland (though different 'steps' or 'tiers' exist within Auckland as well).

That backhaul is managed by Chorus. ISPs don't have a huge amount of influence over how the Chorus backhaul operates.

Over to UFB - the ISPs manage the service from the point the traffic leaves the local HOP in your city. It's the ISPs job to ensure the bandwidth is there.

There is definitely an advantage for regional ISPs. In our case in Tauranga, traffic goes across town (a ms or two), hits our network core & then leaves the city via our peering & transit arrangements.

In the future, I'd like to see a Tauranga peering exchange where a bunch of content can be hosted locally (Akamai & Google caches spring to mind) and not even leave the city. EPL streaming immediately comes to mind.

10 Gigabit links across town are very cheap compared to back-hauling 10gig up & down the country.

People feel comfortable connecting with the telecoms/vodafones as they have a long track record. I don't think UFB will get much traction in Tauranga until the bigger companies get involved .

I don't believe that is the case. We're winning most of our clients from Telecom/Vodafone and the most common reason people cite for signing up with us is we're a local company that actually answers the phone and takes time to answer questions & walk customers through the process.

I can't wait until connection figures are broken out of the national release on a region by region basis.

Based on the cumulative sales effort that ourselves & one other local company are putting in, I'd say Tauranga's progress will be much further ahead than most other regions.

I think there's a bit of hijacking going on in this thread. From here I:

- A user asks Snap about a service and someone else from another ISP tries to solicit business.
- A discussion about UFB models and delivery

If these kind of things don't stop happening, someone will get banned.

Thanks for the quick and detailed response. I look forward to the UFF announcement. As I said I'm still really happy with the quality of the service I'm getting and the price and data cap size are great.
